Hi friends, happy Saturday!
I’m off to a friend’s house for some draaaanks and bbq. What’s your favorite hot weather beverages? I love a good iced tea when I’m not feeling boozy, and then either hard cider or hard seltzer when I am feeling like alcohol.
Unrelated, my hummingbird feeder has been seeing a lot of traffic finally. Today it was low enough that I needed to mix up more sugar water for it.
Being the lazy person I am, I microwave the water with the sugar in it so it’s easier to dissolve into a simple syrup. But that means I need to wait a bit for it to be cool enough to fill the feeder and hang back up. I don’t know what temperatures a hummingbird can safely drink at, but if it’s too hot for me I’m assuming too hot for them.
So, I’ve mixed the sugar water and it’s chilling in the fridge. I look out through my open front door, and I shit you not, there’s a hummingbird just staring into my living room like “HURRY UP LADY, I DON’T HAVE ALL DAY.” A few minutes later after it was cool enough to put back out side (I uh might have used an ice bath to speed this process to get it to tepid temps) it was hopping with visitors again!
*runs around the garden with his tennis racket of doom*
yeah fucking take that you buzzy cunts!
hey stop dodging me! im only try to kill you!
anyways….i fucking love my lectric tennis racket!
I read the first part of your comment and thought you meant you wanted to get rid of hummingbirds or bees! And I was like whhyyyyy farsy, why???
And then I realized you meant mosquitos!
In theory plenty of the birds I see would eat mosquitos, but I’m not sure they are bothering with the ones in my yard.
lol….i have a burning hatred for buzzy insects….unless they are bees…im okay with them
i dont have an issue with birbs…but they are still best advised to stay out of my garden
i have 3 kitties….and they rack up a considerable body count every year…
and then leave the bodies as presents by the back door..
also..we dont have hummingbirds here
they are mythical creatures…like unicorns… we call them kolibries
Anything with fruit. Mixed cocktails today with a simple syrup made with fresh local cherries. I have a watermelon waiting to muddle with mint, black pepper, and club soda as a mix. And I want to try the hound dog Hannibal mentioned yesterday.
Your drink sounds almost un-American. No, do it the American way. Slice the watermelon in half. Scoop out the fruit while not entirely sober. Fill halfway with grain alcohol, something distilled domestically. Add back some of the fruit. Serve with red Solo cups. God bless the USA!
I’m a huge fan of Gerolsteiner sparkling mineral water. Something about the mineral content is extra refreshing, in a very Teutonic, no-nonsense sort of way.
And mint- or cucumber-infused ice waters fit the bill as well.
Yes! A large part of the reason I planted cucumbers this year was that I wanted cucumbers for water that I didn’t have to worry about anything on the skins like wax or pesticides.
…I’m thinking the caipirinha probably gets my vote
Oh it’s been a few years since I had a decent one of those!
Last place I saw them on the menu was a very hipster place and it was all fancy old fashions and shit like that, and I couldn’t figure out how the caipirinha didn’t taste all that good.
Turns out it was some pre-mixed shitty drink in a can they just poured over ice and added a mint sprig to. ASSHOLES.
I’m destroying my digestive tract with an all you can eat Korean bbq. Got home and the dog jumped on my stomach and my life flashed before my eyes.
YOUR DOG DID THAT ON PURPOSE
There isn’t a whole lot of variation with weather here… Sometimes it gets cold enough I can sleep under a blanket, and sometimes it gets warm enough that I consider buying a portable air conditioner, but mostly it’s ok.
But, my typical drink is beer. I tend to favor IPAs, but even lagers are fine… I also like that the low ABV% of beer makes it kinda self-limiting, in that I don’t really “accidentally” get “too drunk”. It also helps that I’m perpetually tired, so if I’m drinking too much, eventually the inhibition-judgement balance shifts enough that I go from “I want another beer” to “I’m going to bed right now, fuck brushing my teeth, taking off my day clothes, or even turning off the lights”
eh, not ideal, but it certainly beats waking up in a ditch in the desert…
Better to have a night’s worth of plaque on your teeth than risk drunk driving, etc.
I take a pretty hard-line personal attitude towards alcohol and automobiles, firearms, work, and assorted other things.
Granted, it helps that I live in an urban area with good (for U.S. values of good…) public transit, and don’t mind walking, and don’t currently have a personal vehicle…
I have also gotten “HEY LADY” -ed by hummingbirds. When I first moved into my condo they were flitting around so someone previous must’ve had a feeder. When my first feeder broke, they wouldn’t use the replacement (?!?) so they would look in my patio.
Every so often I see a hummingbird around my place but I stopped putting out a feeder when bees drowned in it. I tried the bee proof feeder but the birds couldn’t figure it out.
I’m a big fan of rooibos tea, if it is hot out I will make a pot in the morning to have iced in the afternoon, sometimes I put in a little ginger tea to spice it up. Summer is vodka tonic or paloma time, but I bought that monkey shoulder scotch and it calls to me, last night I had a scotch and soda, lovely.
my favorite summer drink that’s non-alcoholic is a handful of raspberries, some crushed mint, a couple drops of Angostura bitters, and then something lemon/limey… whether that’s still water if that’s all that’s around, or a sugar free lemon/lime soda (i.e. whatever the current soda is that *used* to be called Diet Sierra Mist😉)
To make it an appointment drink, just add some regular Malibu–because I like rums….
The other thing that I really like is a bastardized version of a Mojito… muddle lime & mint with demerara sugar, fill the glass with crushed ice to the top, then fill *that* with Malibu–sip when it’s hot out, and the melting of the ice WILL eventually make it a “mixed” drink😉
