  1. …only kidding…you’re all my favorite, really

    • How often do you get your Christmas wish a day early?

A Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Oh, wait. I caught another episode of Hawaii 5-0. In this one, officer Chin Ho is framed for bribery, which is an elaborate plot to discredit the 5-0. “The papers” are all over this. What’s great about this episode is you see lots of interiors, which are what I would describe as Hawaiian postwar Modernism. Bright, airy, with little touches of tiki and Asian decorative art here and there. In the credits it says that the show was filmed on location in Hawaii, so these are not Hollywood backlot sets.

I really, really was born at the wrong time and in the wrong place.

    • I should amend that a little bit. If I were born in Hawaii in, say, 1945, it would take me days to get to Europe in 1965. We’re often at the airport and there’s always a United Airlines plane landing or taking off, so not-so-subtle spon-con. There’s absolutely no security, no gates, nothing. People just wander out onto the tarmac and wait for the gangway to roll up to the entry near the cockpit. And people take their seats and soon enough they’ve lit up and the drinks cart rolls around, so civilized.

This reminds me that at some point in the 1980s you could still smoke on planes, but if a passenger complained, suddenly the whole section went non-smoking. This non-smoking friend of mine had a non-smoking boyfriend who traveled a lot for work and he would pull this stunt. I used to call him a word that rhymes with stunt. Shunt comes close.

But it couldn’t have been that bad because in one episode Steve McGarrett calls the operator and asks her to get get him on the next flight to Singapore, which is not exactly nearby, and before you know it, there he is.

The whole series is fabulous. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

    • Dig up whether they had any Christmas episodes and let us know which one. It was pretty common for 70s shows to do that at least once or twice to goose ratings, and often they were better than usual.

    • I don’t have a hard concept of what exactly the tipping point is, but there’s an ecological point where I just don’t want to be alive anymore. Like actively will seek to not be alive because I’m just done with this ride and want to get off.

I had assumed the last few years it would be when the oceans warm enough to crash the entire ecosystem. But the permafrost thaw and its associated horribleness? Welp that might be the dark horse in the race to keep an eye out for.

  3. How did I miss this?

“Love Actually” stars Emma Thompson and [Hugh] Grant reunited last month to discuss the legacy of the British film in the event, “The Laughter & Secrets of ‘Love Actually’: 20 Years Later – A Diane Sawyer Special.”

I love “Love Actually.” And I also love the fact that 78-year-old widow of Mike Nichols Diane Sawyer is doing schlock like this. Get that coin, Sis.

  4. I tried to pop in to see if I had time to read the DOT  and worried when I saw it was Jake’s…

    Enjoy the holiday season everyone!

    • This is a Meg fell asleep on her laptop again DOT!! Well done Jake!!!

  5. A Chicago-style Merry Christmas to All!

    • I love the fact that the two girls look like members of the Bund Deutscher Mädel. That’s the stuff! Get cracking, girls. It’s time to start pumping out the babies to preserve the…I don’t even know how to say this in English…the promotion of the integrity of the race. That’s a mouthful auf Deutsch.

        • Have you ever heard of the Geschwister Scholl? They’re famous in Germany because in a country of, I don’t know, 80 million maybe (Germany used to be very big, even after the loss of territory after WWI) they were two of maybe two dozen ethnic Germans, non-Jewish, people who didn’t think Naziism was such a hot idea. They’re held up as shining exemplars of the essential decency of the German people. Wirklich?

One of my favorite pieces of post-Third Reich trivia is Der Führer set up a retreat called the Eagle’s Nest up in the Berghof, from where he could look into the country of his birth, Austria, and when the Americans occupied the area they turned it into an R&R ski resort for GIs and their families. Hitler famously didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, and was a vegetarian, so you’d be summoned to wherever he was and you couldn’t either. He’d rant and lecture for hours. This in an era when most people smoked and had wine or aperitifs with their meat-based dinners.

The first time I met a guy (who had designs on me) who told me he didn’t smoke, drink and didn’t eat meat, I invoked Godwin’s Law before the phrase had been coined. “Well, you know, I do all three. You know who didn’t…” He was a nice guy, actually. I probably could have been very happy with him. My lungs and liver probably would have been better off.

      • Cousin Matty, unfortunately in today-speak, that would be “Tradwife” territory.

It’s *definitely* around, and definitely Trad/Fash/Neonazi crap. It’s just more “aesthetically pleasing” for the Insta & Tiktok generations now🙃
