I haven’t seen a NOT so I thought I’d step into the breach. I hope this is OK.
I have been reading about Jenny from the Block. She recently celebrated her 52nd birthday aboard her yacht in St-Tropez and then found herself (presumably she sailed) on the Isle of Capri. The image above is of her and that guy who was one of the Batmans (Batmen?) enjoying a quiet meal on Capri. One assumes she rented the entire restaurant to ensure the quiet meal, save for the papparazzo conveniently tipped off to commemorate this event and splash this image around the globe.
So! Do you have any upcoming travel plans? I have none, but The Global Executive is supposed to resume traveling. Every day brings a Covid-related MMA-style kick in the face, it seems, so who knows.
No travel plans, yet. I spoke to Mrs. Butcher about taking a road trip to OH to visit a couple of old friends of mine with which I’d recently reconnected. But, she wants to wait to decide on whether we’re doing it until after she has some oral surgery. We’re not sure when the oral surgery will be–the consult is on the 17th–so it’s entirely possible that we’re not going to do any traveling at all this year.
I’m going on our yearly Tahoe trip in a little over a week. My wife’s family has had timeshares there for about 40 years & it is our family reunion with them. It always has highs & lows but is pretty chill, lots of early morning paddle boarding & random adventures. The smoke & fires may make it less beautiful than usual & the Safeway bear being relocated less likely to have an unwanted encounter in the produce aisle but still fun. My brother-in-law & I do all the cooking so that is a challenge for 12 to 15 people. Looks like my wife’s dad may be a late scratch which is sad since he is about 90 & if he doesn’t come this year, he probably never will again.
After that we have some local trips to get my daughters set up in school & maybe one to get my mom setup in Hilo. Ugggh, I don’t even like to travel but seems like I won’t be home much the rest of summer.
We are hibernating. Vaccinated guests are welcome. Feel free to check with Meg for a review of accommodations.
I’m very interested in seeing
the record collectionyou guys at some point when the time permits. And we would be very interested in seeing
your darling dogyou at any time!Careful what you wish for! I took my first excursion today without Greased Lightning. I wanted to pick up lunch for us at this deli near me (they inspired my chopped cheese FYCE) but like any good bodega the aisles are incredibly narrow and all is chaos around the deli counter. So I very gingerly walked over there, the sidewalks being in a condition you’d find after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, but it was a success!
Tomorrow I’m going to get Nurse Ratched to stand at the entrance to one of our fire escape stairwells and I’m going to attempt downhill and uphill walking. That is really the last impediment to my complete recovery, climbing or descending stairs. I am going for the gold.
Get after it, @MatthewCrawley!
My Olympic dream is to one day resume subway travel. A few stations have elevators but they’re often out of service, so the hopeful straphanger usually confronts stairs that were put in around WWI and have been left to decay ever since.
When I went with Sacajawea (no offense meant to the Indigenous) down to the Apple Store we took an Uber both ways. Distance traveled: about 5 miles. Round-trip cost: $113. (We did have to order an oversize car for each trip because of Greased Lightning.) Time on subway, assuming they’re running and you can get an express train: about 20 minutes. Round-trip cost: $5.50 per person.
congrats!
I am going camping this weekend at a friend’s private land – not at an actual campground – but IDK who is going to water my plants while I am gone so I am a bit nervous.
Literally just booked a trip to Turks and Caicos in oct and Florida for Thanksgiving. Had airline credit from march 2020 after a cancelled trip and had to use it by the end of this year .
I don’t know about the rest of the island, but Grand Turk is lovely! I’ve stopped there a few times on cruises.
crap meant to say islands, not island. I don’t know about the rest of the islands
sorry about that
I would like to go to
1) Vegas with friends, but maybe next year. Time and money issues.
2) Vancouver/San Diego to visit friends. Again Time and Money issues.
vegas is overrated, but well, it’s worth at least one trip, if nothing else, just to realize it’s overrated, and not regret going…
I’d recommend going in the winter. Or, at least any of those other seasons that aren’t summer…
This comment is less inspired by my actual trips to Vegas (maybe around a half dozen?), and more by the time I spent living in Victorville, CA, and every Friday and Saturday, the freeway (I-15?) heading to Vegas from LA would be bumper-to-bumper. And then come Sunday, the other direction (to LA from Vegas) would be bumper-to-bumper. I’d probably need another entirely separate vacation or two just to deal with that traffic, and I think a lot of these people were doing it everydamnedweekend…
I had planned on a few short trips, but I don’t know how confident I feel about traveling right now.
Just for the record we can all have St. Tropez tans!
https://us.sttropeztan.com/
All laughter aside, this is actually my go-to home self-tanner and it looks natural and not orange at all. I haven’t used it this summer because I’m not seeing sunlight so why even pretend. But it does work very well!
Car-camping in Wyoming next week.
Long weekend in Eastern Oregon (Anthony Lakes) a week after that.
Can’t wait for any of it.
If you drive through Baker City go to Barley Browns Brewing. Really good beer!
YES. Been there several times (every time I go through Baker)!
Have you been to Bend? Beer heaven!
And Melvin in Wyoming!
OK, yes to Bend. Beer everywhere.
But Melvin. That’s new to me. That’s in Jackson, with Snake River Brewery. Wrong end of the state for this trip, but I’ll keep an eye out for it whilst traveling.
Plenty over in Laramie, though: https://www.visitlaramie.org/restaurants/breweries/laramie-brewery-tour/
Never been to Laramie. If you are ever in western WA., I would love to take you on a brewery tour.
When the plague times are truly over, @Loveshaq, I will take you up on that.
I am plant-sitting for a friend who is on vacation, that’s probably as close as I’ll get.
Plant sitting you say? I have a friend that needs a plant sitter if you are in the greater Toronto area! #Myo’splantsarethirsty
Bit of a drive from IL. Plus they aren’t even opening the borders for a month, I think?
I’ve been thinking about this…
I could certainly use some time off, and I’m going on about a year and a half without using any vacation days, so I probably have some to spare…
But, I’m really hesitant to try and plan anything until COVID is either over, or we just accept defeat about it (fuck you magat idiot assholes (srsly, at this point, I think someone wearing one of those stupid red hats should be considered carte blanche for whatever violent actions deemed necessary to ensure a reasonable person’s safety. those fuckwits are like the opposite of civilization))
Plus, I’m still relatively new at this job, and slowly racking up my medical leave, and I figure one of these days I’m going to get hit by/slam into a car during my bicycle commute, and if I live through it, I expect I’ll need a month or two of leave saved up to account for the broken limbs. From past experience, I rarely use sick leave, so I don’t think this will be a long-term issue, but being new, it’s something I’m low-key-concerned-about. So I’m reluctant to burn any vacation until I have a good 4-6 weeks or so of med leave stocked up…
Also related, It’s been a long damned time since I’ve had an active passport, so I’ll have to see about all that red tape. And I don’t really want to get a passport photo taken right now, because as cool as my mask tanlines are, I’d rather not have them on what is likely to be my last ever photo ID…
Anyways… I’ve been thinking about taking some time off. Maybe do some backpacking? (which I haven’t done in like a good decade or so, but I still have all the gear…), but I need to figure out something that’s accessible via Amtrak/Greyhound or similar, but then there is all this kerfluffle with forestfires and such…
