    My daughter worked at Lush when she was an undergrad. At the time it was in a Macy’s. So they had to follow the insane holiday schedule. Some mornings they opened at 6am. And they were open daily until midnight. And nobody shopped before 8 or after 10. In addition to keeping staff working when they could be home resting it messed with the sales numbers. As soon as a new luxury shopping center was built nearby Lush hightailed it out of there. I haven’t been in our Macy’s in a while but last time I was it was a ghost town.

    • …that guardian link up top was certainly one of the less poorly chosen headlines for that yesterday…fair enough that the response to that happening needed to work through that possibility first to confirm/deny it but there’s not really an excuse for running “terrorist attack” headlines before that’s settled…maybe we need to update the rule of thumb about yelling “fire” in a crowded theatre?

  5. It turns out one of the big groups pushing Trump’s fascist takeover plan is heavily funded by the Hewlett Foundation, well known for their backing of NPR:

    In 2020 they gave over $600,000, half of what they gave NPR. And in the latest IRS reporting period they gave almost $1.5 million, one third of the group’s funding, and more than what they gave NPR.

    They are one of those front groups for people like Josh Hawley, JD Vance and Tom Cotton to claim they’re standing up for everyday Americans against corporate America, and it’s not surprising to see them somehow, gee, linked up with the most extreme pro-corporate groups also funding the fascist plan.

    It’s a scam — one common plan, but put together from groups with different messaging for different donors to allow for plausible deniability.

    Josh Hawley knows how the game is played, but somehow a lot of dupes think he’s serious about his “anti-corporate”  beliefs, or else see it as good cover.

    • Plan 2025 is basically a takeover by the billionaires (of all stripes) because they fear that Joe Biden is going to do an FDR and tax the fuck out of their ill gotten fortunes (and he damn well should.) Biden’s Admin surprised me that they’ve tacked to the left center than the middling center right everyone including me expected. They would rather have a vengeful narcissist as preznit than Joe because of low taxes (and they feel they can control Trump via flattery like everyone else.) The irony that this is happening while the Repubs are collapsing so they are pulling out all their stops to make this happen. Including 3rd party runs, centrist Dem challegers, Sienma/Munchin tales of woe.

      I don’t think this is coordinated very well, but this leak shows that no billionaire is the Dems friend right now. The only thing saving Joe is that the poor coordination means duplication of effort, the exposure of key “hidden” assets such as BlueDog aka Centrist “Dems” and Trump going to jail. If Trump goes to jail then the GOPers preznit campaign is dead in the water. Who is going to capture independent voters AND MAGAts? No one.

      There is a panic among the billionaire class that they feel they’re losing control.

      This is why the flawed polling is prominent in the billionaire owned MSM. Why the NYT has suddenly become the Trump paper of record. Why Joe Is Old stories are everywhere. The constant crying of “spoiled workers”, “quiet quitting” and “recession is coming!”

      Follow the money.

      • One of Mitt Romney’s parting bits of wisdom (which he should have said from the beginning) is that Senators like Hawley and Vance were absolutely and utterly shameless. Everything they said was in bad faith.

        Of course they’re in the vanguard for fascism, but they’ve feasted on the needy lefties who eat up “Hillbilly Elegy” stories about how the monsters will find common ground if we just meet them halfway.

    ETA: I don’t know how @SplinterRIP and @MegMegMcGee do this every week. It took a bit of time, and I was fairly exhausted afterward. Mad props to our doggedly determined DOT builders.
