Ugh, January [NOT 25/1/24]

Author's Note: This is not the author.

Hi, friends!

Ugh, January.

The month that feels like it has 23423 days. The month that drags. February is usually colder here than January, but at least March is when spring starts so you’re so close in February.

Does anybody actually like January?

  1. I don’t like January because everyone is so bankrupted and exhausted by the December holiday season. And people return back to work after the Christmas/New Year’s break and no one enjoys that.

To combat this, one of my best friends and I used to throw a huge party. Everyone came. Anything to get out of the house. And meanwhile I would have just thrown the Holiday Open House.

That best friend, needless to say, is one of many who fled New York, probably never to return. Oh well, there will come a day when we’ll start having parties again. And you Deadsplinterites will be the first to know!

    • Your ambition is your downfall. You don’t need a huge party, all you really need is a couple of people to sit on the couch with you and the dog and watch Hawaii Five 0 and drink pineapple juice and rum.

      • My motto is “the more the merrier.” Always has been. I hated the lockdowns. BH and I love each other very much, and we have Faithful Hound, so that was fine, but getting used to cooking for just the three of us, rather than a dozen, was an adjustment. And just when I thought we were out of the woods I contracted Covid, from that horrid hospital, so now I don’t even trust myself to not be an asymptomatic superspreader.

        • Eh, it’s life as you get older and people get tired. At least until you move into a senior citizens complex and it’s like being in college again, with everyone meeting in the dining hall and goung on road trips and sneaking into each others rooms.

  2. The short days suck.  I just heard on our news that today is the last day the sun goes down b4  5pm.  That’s nice, when we have sun like today.  Our weather has been crazy, low 50s today after teens just a week ago.

  3. Stressing out like *crazy* over here this January, ngl!😉😂🤣

I went to a few different apartments today, to talk to the building managers, and/or look at units.

Applied at one (not the one I mentioned last night), that’s a Studio, on the ground floor/”Garden Level”, with South-facing windows.

It’s about what I’m paying right now, and i’ll also need to pay for electric.

But if I can get approved for it, I can move in for the 1st, and be OUT of here, without needing to worry about roommates for a year at least.

I’ve been terrified to pull my credit score, because I figured it was awful from having lost my job back in 2013, and going back to college…

I need at least a 500 to get the apartment, and was SO worried my credit was so thrashed by the last 10 years, that I was WELL below the 500 threshold.

Turns out, I was *over* 600!🤯😃

No, NOT great credit *at all*, BUT faaaaaar better than I’ve been so very worried I had!😆😂🤣

I was afraid I was UNDER 500, because of things like getting behind on the last few payments when I had the Grand Prix, and needing to settle out the last two payments on it, and the crap-ton of Student Loans I have…

But I *might* be able to get the one I toured today!🤞🤞🤞

It’s small, but it could be SO cozy.

Parking outside again IS gonna suck, it’s been SO nice to just get in the vehicle and *go* in the morning… buuut I can deal with that.

The rent deal on the apartment I applied for was pretty awesome–the 3rd & 11th month are *free* with a 12-month lease, so I’d also be saving a bit over $1400, for the year of leasing there.

The manager seemed REALLY busy, but she was also upfront about the issues (same as here, honestly, because it’s still in Uptown).

I got a good vibe off her, though, and I DO know the neighborhood. (It’s 6 blocks south of my *first* Minneapolis apartment😉

I’m crossing my fingers, and hoping I get good news tomorrow.

    • Good luck!  We are sending you positive vibes.

      • Thanks Shaq!💖

      • Thanks @Elliecoo!

It’s little, but it could be *so* nice & cozy!

    • Minneapolis? Do the Mary Tyler Moore throwing her hat in air thing if it works out.

      Good luck!

      • I’m hoping it’ll work, I don’t have a beret, though, so maybe a celebratory book-reading, instead?😉😁💖

  4. Not to be an old grumpy contrarian, but I like January. It holds the freshness of the endless possibilities of a new year. (Reality will strike soon enough.) Also, my birthday, and those of several people of whom I am quite fond, all fall in January.

    • Things I will say are good — the days are getting longer. The holiday pressure is off. The bird feeder is entertaining. It’s baking weather.

  5. January don’t bother me none.  I don’t have to mow and the holidays are in the rearview.

I could use a few more hours of daylight, though.

  6. only problem i have with january is that i cant ever figure out where the fuck it went

like…..ive barely recovered from new years eve…..how in the fuck is it almost february now?

i woke up and went to work a few times….it should be like….maybe jan 10th now?

january always just up an dissapears on me as a nothing month

  7. I was born in January, so….

But I also love the post-holiday quiet. I don’t know why the holidays have to be so freaking busy and LOUD. So January is the one hangover I can enjoy. And for me, it’s gone by too quickly this year.
