  4. The first Texas investigation targeting a legal abortion in another state has been launched:

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas/article/abortion-lawsuit-texas-19437421.php

A Texas man has asked a court for permission to launch an investigation into his ex-partner’s alleged out-of-state abortion, which could lead to one of the first lawsuits against people who help Texans leave the state to obtain the procedure.

It’s already been swept under the rug, but the Texas law allows people to get a court order to investigate pretty much anyone theoretically involved in assisting a woman in Texas to go somewhere abortion is legal.

Chip in a hundred bucks to your pregnant sister? Texas courts could open up your bank account. Lend your car to your cousin? Texas could make you an accomplice.

Texas bans all abortions except those that would save a pregnant person’s life or prevent “substantial impairment of a major bodily function.” Doctors can be punished under state law with up to a lifetime in prison and up to $100,000 in civil penalties, as well as the loss of their medical license.

Texas laws exempt the woman who received the abortion from punishment, but under Mitchell’s six-week abortion ban, private citizens can sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion in civil court for damages of at least $10,000.

And this is what Trump backs. The press wants to say he has moderated his position, because of course they need to be balanced and fair.

    • Fuck. Safe to say, I hate most men. Safe only in the sense that it’s probably not an exaggeration.

      • One of the creepier things about the Texas law is that the attorney who designed it was praised in the press for clever legal maneuvering, rather than completely corrupting the legal system.

It’s not designed to stop with just abortion, either. It’s set up so that it can be extended to anything the religious right opposes. Not only do they want to use a Trump court to overturn gay marriage in red states, if someone drives their brother and boyfriend to a blue state to get married, they would be able to be sued. Truck drivers who carry copies of books banned in Texas from a warehouse in state to California could be sued.

And Trump and his minions are aiming to pack the Supreme Court to guarantee that this will happen. Anyone who thinks that he won’t make the courts much, much worse than they already are is deluding themselves.

  5. I hope that turtle is okay and gets rinsed off before the concrete dries.
