Weekend’s Almost Over [NOT 14/2/21]

Hi friends! As per usual, our weekend is almost over.

Are things winding down for you, too? Make any interesting food this weekend? My Sunday consisted of Valentine’s candy and now pizza. Got to balance out that sugar with some savory. 🙂

I’m settling down to watch disc 2 of season 2 of Star Trek Discovery and I am really impressed with season 2 so far!

Fun fact! Writer Dorothy Parker is credited with the saying “What fresh hell is this?” She supposedly answered phone calls and the doorbell with that question. Sometimes I think it when I see emails come in from certain coworkers.

  1. Tomorrow we start the annual sheep-shearing over here.  Half tomorrow and half in one month.  It’s a long day, so I might turn in early.  I don’t actually do the shearing.  We have a guy who comes in from West Virginia and he’s a pro.  Last year, we had a couple of local boys who were as big as defensive linemen to help wrangle the sheep.  I’m the unskilled labor who helps with the “combing”, which basically means cleaning off the mud and sheep shit on a big round table that turns.  Then I carry it over to the baler, which smooshes it down into a bundle where it gets tied up.  It’s more fun than it sounds.  Plus, people come around from all over the area to help out and there is a big farm lunch.  In fact, this may be the first sit-down meal I’m having with anyone besides my wife in almost a  year.

    • When it was time for bringing in and stacking all the hay bales in the barns, we did the same thing where I grew up–everybody getting together and making light work with many hands in a 110-degree barn.  It was more fun than it sounds.

  2. We have another storm coming tonight and tomorrow. 4-7 inches of snow and another 1/4 inch of ice on top of what’s still there. Hopefully it will be the last of the nasty winter weather here.

    • A friend lives in Austin and they’re getting the coldest weather they’ve ever had. Like the power company is telling people to expect rolling blackouts because they can’t sustain all the energy needed for all the heating.

      • I suppose that’s one good thing about living in IL. Three weeks of almost zero in the winter, waves of almost a hundred in the summer, we’ve never had power issues *knocks on all the wood* I just have to worry about tornadoes.

  3. I have off tomorrow, mostly, except for morning reporting and asap email triage. All cooking ahead and cleaning are completed. So, a day of maybe relaxation (don’t want to jinx it).

  4. Tomorrow is one of the days when I’m incredibly glad I work for a school district😉
I’m hoping to get my car back from the shop tomorrow, early (if I’m lucky, this is just a $450-ish repair–yay!) I had a “low engine power” (something like that) warning Friday at noon, when I ran to get lunch,so I called the shop to ask if I could bring her in & if they had a loaner… yes to both, and they called me back by 3 to say that my throttle body had condensation that stuck it open, as well as an electrical connecter in there that had water vapor that froze, and they discovered that my thermostat was tripping an error code.
They’ll call in the morning to let me know when she’s ready, and I’m *hoping* that I can get away with less than $500, for once (which would be a HUGE improvement over the cost of last year’s regular repair costs–which regularly ran about $1200 a pop!)

Other than that, homework for my college classes, and then running to Walmart for insulin & dog food for Lily, and to Costco to finally pick up my membership card.

I work at the Grocery Store later on in the day, and then it’ll probably be finishing up my homework from 10-midnight, if I have any left😉

  5. I’m taking tomorrow off with no real plans other than a couple errands. I had to shovel a lot of snow today, so I’m guessing I won’t feel like working out tomorrow. We’ll see.

  6. my fresh hell appears to be ice….lots of it
seems we are having sleet on top of all the snow n ice we already had
i better leave a couple minutes early to get to work today as its pretty challenging out there….lol
gonna be a fun bike ride
(other than that ive got at least one more season of the expanse to watch and a whole jrpg to start playing…tales of berseria…should keep me busy for a while)

    • does seem to be winters last hurrah over here tho
we are going from -10 to 10 pretty much overnight….suspect that will cause a nasty case of the sniffles

      • wow…all the schools and rona testing locations just announced they are not opening today…and the trains already stopped running…
i have a feeling im going to be lonely at work today
i wonder if that means im an idiot for coming in…lol… oh well

  7. I decided to just be lazy today, and sleep in.  Did put my new rear rack on my bike, and did go out to get some pizza, but that was the extent of my accomplishments today…
This rear rack sits almost entirely behind the rear axle, and I’m having some second thoughts.  -er, second thoughts on this specific rear rack, that’s something like eleventeenth thoughts on rear racks on this bike in general.  If I push down on it with one hand, I can get the front wheel to lift off the ground.  So, I’m guessing it’s going to be difficult if I were to try and load it up near it’s weigh capacity of ~50Kg/110lbs.  Although, I probably won’t ever do that…  But now I’m thinking I should get a front rack to better allow me to split the weight.
Except, I don’t think I’m going to need it too often?  I’ve got a frame bag on the way, and I think that alone will handle ~90% of my typical commute needs.  I mostly want a rear rack until the frame bag comes in, and to hold backpack/messenger bag panniers that I can use to carry stuff for work trips, which will probably be a thing again after covid clears up.
Anyways, I should probably try to clean/lube the chain tomorrow…
