Welcome Back…[DOT 21/3/22]

…to the work week.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

In case you were wondering and/or concerned, the toilet installation went basically without a hitch. Kohler thought it would be a genius idea to package the wax ring in the box UNDER the bowl part of the toilet, so it was completely smushed and mangled.

So I had to make a quick trip to Ace, the helpful hardware place, and grab a new wax ring. All in all, success!

  1. Sister-wife Kim Davis is back in the news again. A federal judge has ruled that she violated the rights of two same-sex couples in 2015 by unilaterally refusing to issue them marriage licenses, which she was legally bound to do as part of her job.

    https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/19/politics/kim-davis-civil-lawsuit-same-sex-couples/index.html

How did she get this job anyway? Well, first she was hired by her mother, who had the job before her, and then succeeded her when Mom didn’t want it anymore. It is an elected position, so the good citizens of Rowan County, KY, must have thought this was a good idea. Interestingly, she and Mom were Democrats, but in 2015 Kim switched to the Republican party.

She was eminently suited to the job, having been married four times, twice to the same man. She was jailed, and after she was sprung she and her husband, whichever one that was, wrangled a group meeting with Pope Francis when he was in DC for some reason. According to wiki she describes herself as an Apostolic Christian, whatever that is, but her mother, the former County Clerk/her boss, was Catholic. Thus Kim managed to drag the spiritual leader of 1/4 of the globe into this tawdry Moonshine Hollow affair. (The Vatican backpedaled at once, and it takes quite a lot to get the Vatican to backpedal.) But His Holiness wasn’t the only one. People around the country celebrated her for conscientiously objecting to laws they don’t like, even if she is sworn to uphold and carry out those laws as part of her job.

What I want to know is, in these inflationary times, do you save that much money by going to JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and crafting your own long johns/floor-length smock dress combos out of factory seconds?

  2. Anyone who wants to join the Ukraine Foreign Legion should be asking themselves:

1 Do I have prior military training?

    2 Am I physically fit?

    3 Can I speak/read the language?

4 What is my gear/loadout?  Do I get standard Ukraine gear?

5 What unit am I going to?

6 What unit training/individual training am I going to get?

    7 Radio procedures?

    8 Identification?

    9 Supply?

If you can’t answer any of these with yes then probably best to avoid it.  At best you’re a foreign savior and more likely the worst you’re going to get a whole bunch of people killed/cannon fodder. A group of friends playing paintball is better organized than this.  Well meaning but goddamn stupid.

This advice coming from a military amateur.

    • Speaking of people (an American in this case) hot-footing it off to Ukraine:

      https://www.silive.com/news/2022/03/former-staten-island-rep-michael-grimm-in-ukraine-to-document-war.html

Grimm served served as a Staten Island congressman in New York’s 13th and 11th Congressional districts from 2011 to 2015 until he was convicted of fraud. He resigned from his seat before serving a brief prison sentence for tax evasion.

Newsmax expects nothing less from its Special Correspondents.

You might remember Michael Grimm’s tenure in The People’s House:

      https://www.politico.com/story/2014/01/michael-grimm-apologizes-reporter-102808

[Grimm] then returned and got in [NY1 reporter] Scotto’s face, threatening to throw him over the balcony if he asked the question [about tax evasion, which later sent Grimm to the hoosgow] again. The exchange was caught on live TV, though it took place partially off camera.

    • The language gap alone would be crippling. Nobody has time to communicate with gestures. I’m sure a bigger chunk of Ukrainians speak English than Americans speak Ukrainian, but you can’t really expect them to accommodate you during a war.

The people that the article describes do not seem to be … entirely stable. The Canadian claims Ukrainian relatives so maybe he speaks the language. The one from Texas? That boy ain’t right.

  3. Following up on a DOT article from a couple of weeks ago — Giant Foreign Spiders…. not so bad.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2022/03/15/joro-spider-facts/

“These are beautiful spiders which may provide important ecosystem services, including biological control of crop pests such as brown marmorated stink bugs or spotted lanternfly, with which they have an ancient association in their native range in eastern Asia,” said Michael Raupp, an entomologist at the University of Maryland.

It turns out they are the same size as native orb weaver spiders,  rarely bite people, and their bites are generally not harmful.

We get big orb weaver spiders on our porch every fall and they are fine. Worst case scenario is snagging them with a broom and redepositing them in the bushes.

    • Yeah, we’ve got big orb weavers all over Florida. Once they said the Joro was about the same as they are, I was like, meh. Around here you only encounter orb weavers in the woods for the most part. The size is somewhat startling, but they won’t hurt you. We’ve got MUCH more problematic invasive species here than a relatively inoffensive spider.

    • …holy shit…how much worse than the kind of thing I know some of them have said can it be, I thought to myself before I hit play…& sure, some of the quotes were ones I knew & expected

…but…fuck…there were worse…just what the hell is wrong with these people that can say that shit & give every appearance of actually thinking it?
