We’re Old [NOT 25/11/24]

Hi, friends!

I had a coworker show me their new stickers for their laptop today and I was like huh, I don’t understand the reference there. I think one maybe is a Ted Lasso?

So anyways, have you had any recent reminders that you’re old?

  1. My lower back got mad at me yesterday. I guess the good thing as far as aging is it was the same kind of thing that’s happened for a couple of decades, and fortunately the frequency and severity hasn’t increased. There just seems to be a flareup every 6-10 months and then it goes away. So maybe I’m not getting older?

  2. Yuuuuuuup!!!

Dug myself a *giant* “old fogie” hole, at the after-school program today, asking one kid if his name was Mean Gene Okerlund, Jesse “The Body” Vebtura, Adrian Adonis, Rowdy Roddy Piper, or *maybe* Andre The Giant…

I *knew* the kiddo wouldn’t know any of the names!

But i didn’t realize my adult co-worker ALSO wouldn’t recognize any of them….

    Not even ANDRE, y’all!!!

The Princess Bride evoked a, “Oh, *wait*, i thiiiiink i might have heard of that one?”

    đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±

Then, when I tried to explain that Andre, at 7’4″ was even taller than Shaq?

I also had to explain WHO Shaq is, and WHY he is famousđŸ« đŸ« đŸ«

Take me out to the pasture, and get me ready for the glue fastory, apparently!đŸ˜†đŸ˜‚đŸ¤£đŸ˜±

    • I saw Andre wrestle back in the day against a bunch of Samoans as part of a show called Wrestling Hawaii.  I then saw all of them in Chinatown at an all you can eat Mongolian BBQ.  They made the place close eventually because those guys would eat there almost every night!

      • I’m not sure I can see how any restaurant could keep up with those guys.

I read the stories about how much beer he could drink and it was tough to open the bottles or cans fast enough for him.

      • There was a pub back in Kingston that had a 72oz burger challenge (finish the whole thing AND finish the fries then you can eat for free.) I don’t know who would really want to eat a 72 oz burger, but someone thought it was a good idea. The first time it rolled out, the Queen’s University football team Offensive line took it as a personal challenge and apparently they finished it off so the pub lost a lot of money so they increased the amount of fries till it was literally a mountain of fries.

A friend of mine decided to try his stomach at this… it didn’t go well as he couldn’t finish the fries and the burger. I helped him a little, but at this point in my early 20s I recognized the absurdity of eating that much food and stupidity of young males.

  3. Back when the workplace was sort of smart, they put together a team of mostly young guys together to pump out a particular drug. I applied and was put on this team and I was the old man of the group.

When we would go out for beers, I got asked what was it like to see Pangea, or where was I when WW1 started. At that time I was maybe 12-15 years older than most of my coworkers, but I was the “old” man.

Some stopped laughing when I openly flirted with one of the engineers supporting us during a presentation (she was about 15 years younger than me) and cockblocked all the younger guys who had the hots for her. I got a lot of jealous glares and side-eye even from my supervisor.

  4. I have been practicing getting up out of my chair without making a noise after my daughter pointed out to me that I was making the old man sound whenever I arose from the La-Z-boy.

    • To be fair (“to be fair”) I do a lot of physical stuff so when the time of day for sitting in the La-Z-Boy comes around I am usually experiencing some general soreness.

But honestly, I mostly make the noise because it’s so satisfying.

  5. my morning routine starts with clicking all my bits back into allignment….

thats probably a sign of old

goddamn are some of those clicks satisfying tho

course….sometimes i get one wrong and hobble around like fucking igor for a while…..
