Hi, friends! Let’s have a silly chatter time post.
What’s something you dislike but aren’t sure why you dislike it? Or something you just fucking dislike for a clear reason?
I really dislike Greek style yogurt. I’m slowly working through a tub in the fridge from ye olde Costco and it’s fine. But also like ugh if Costco just sold a vat of regular plain unsweetened yogurt I’d be much happier. I don’t know why I dislike the texture of Greek style yogurt so much since I love sour cream and use it all the time in meals. It makes no sense. But here we are.
Firepits that look too contrived.
Don’t get me wrong, I admire the effort in a few cases, but most times I’m thinking “put that shit inside and pay the insurance ffs I’m trying to pretend I am not here!”
Myo, does it annoy you as well if they have a metal firepit or a chiminea? Or just when someone has a bunch of cinderblocks creatively arranged in the yard?
Re: metal – DO NOT get me started.
The cinder block thing depends on location. If you’re in the middle of nowhere there is no need to make it appear as though you’re in a city, with nosy neighbours, where cinder blocks are SOMETIMES acceptable.
This is such an interesting conversation, I feel like we have very different experiences with firepits.
Like as someone who has basically always lived in a suburb, the metal small firepits are pretty common to have on some pavers or a gravel section out in the back yard.
I don’t think per municipal code we can actually even have like dedicated fire pit areas on the ground.
“Ok Google…interesting synonyms”
” sad” didn’t show up on the list.
When this pandemic ends, we need to have a DS get together where I’ll be responsible for the actual fire, @loveshaq can provide the undrinkable beer, @butcherbakertoiletrymaker can bring the disgusting dead carcass, @sedevilc can bring the tofu, and @megmegmcgee can bring the bagged gas so we all make it back home.
Cool, I have a some great recipes for Molson, Labatts, & Kokanee! Shitty beer night people! Be there!
Is there a hard cider option? I’m not really a beer drinker.
I have never made cider though I’m sure I could make a shitty cider too!
You’ve got tons of quality apple orchard options up there, so I have faith in your abilities!
It’s more of a challenge to make great apples into shitty cider but I appreciate the confidence.
Iirc, y’all get Gravenstein apples out there?
They supposedly make excellent cider (and brandy!😉), and they’re TASTY for eating, too💖

Don’t know that one but the Cosmic Crisp is crazy new one that will last a full year without rotting. These are our most popular varieties.

So the alternative in Missouri… to go out somewhere in the country where there’s a legit fun time with a bonfire?
No fucking thank you, I don’t want all the damn ticks biting me up. I can deal with chiggers and mosquitos and biting flies and fleas. DEET only does so much to repel the ticks though.
But this state is like the best place in the damn country for ticks. We got deer ticks. Dog ticks. Lone Star ticks. Gulf Coast ticks are making their way through the state.
We got Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (over 60% of cases come from 5 states, including Missouri!), Bourbon virus. One of my close friends now has that stupid alpha-gal allergy thanks to a tick bite here.
Best case scenario I’m pulling ticks out of my armpit or behind my knee. Worst case scenario I’m using a hand mirror to find them and trying to yank them out of the groin area with tweezers.
Ticks are nasty! I remember my sister burning them off her dog w/ cigarettes when I was little. Not good memories.
We just glopped Vaseline on the tick so it suffocates and then pop it off with tweezers. Gets the head out usually that way, too.
I like my disgusting dead animal carcass so rare a good vet could bring it back.
I have to get to work! My first attempt at tofu was a failure but the pulp leftover from making soy milk made awesome hummus!
I have a cast aluminum chimnea. It’s beautiful and practical.

Rural fire pit= large truck/ ideally tractor tire rim, with the middle torch-cut out, placed *on top* of the ground, to keep the fire from spreading.
Necessary, because half the volunteer fire department is likely to be at that bonfire, and they really don’t wanna have their “fun night at the bonfire” ruined by having to try & sober up on a run to the fire hall to gear up & drive back out to fight a damn grass fire…
OR have their wives drive them in to town, just to gear up & wait for the guys who didn’t go to the bonfire to drive the trucks back out so they can get it knocked down.😉
Town fire pits?
Depends in a HUGE way, on one’s soil type. In my last city (the exurb), there was clay soil everywhere…
Which basically necessitated a fire-ring sunk into the ground & surrounded by pavers… because inevitably the fire-pit was in the lowest/almost lowest part of the yard (privacy), which stayed soggy for weeks & ate your lawn chairs by the end of the evening, if you didn’t have pavers.
The best fire ring i got to see out there belonged to a friend who did power-line work. One time, when he was helping to lay new underground cables, they had to remove & reinstall a new manhole…
He got to take home the old one & sunk it into their backyard for their fire ring. He flipped it upside down, dig the hole so only the top 10-12″ was above ground, and then re-buried the rest.
Even a small fire in that beast kept you warm on a cold evening until dawn, because the cast iron absorbed then radiated so much heat😉😁
I hate how every damned backpack, messenger bag, duffel, rucksack, hip pack, and fucking belt pocket thingy marketed towards men have fucking MOLLE straps on them. It’s dumb, it’s nearly useless, and it adds excess material, labor, and cost to the production of an item, in addition to making it heavier, with a very minor practical use.
The same with those damned “shemagh” scarfs that everone had prior to covid, and would wear to the stupid grocery store, as if they are some special ops soldier in a desert environment. I guess that’s the one upside of masks being politicized, is now those people are convinced they can’t breath through them, so they aren’t fucking wearing them around town anymore
I’m learning new words tonight!
Thank you for the MOLLE acronym. Now I know the name for those stupid fucking straps that annoy me so much.
I’d never seen a shemagh scarf before covid where I live. But also, it’s Missouri.
So… a goofy/laughable thing about those MOLLE straps, from Autism-land😉🤣💖
They’re incredibly useful/helpful, when you’re trying to calm down/relax some kiddos who have ASD’s–and a few years back, some students at the U of M even designed a backpack *specifically* to help those kiddos–with a chest strap, padded waist strap, and plenty of loops for attaching fidgets & chewies😉🤣💖
They’re called “Nessel Packs” and once you put some weight in them, they basically act as a weighted vest that *looks* like a backpack😁
We were given some by the designers, when I worked at the Autism Day-Treatment place, and they DID work really well for doing walks with some of our kiddos, when they were having hard days💞
We staffers tried them on, too, to see what they were like–and they were pretty comfortable–they just kinda wrap you up like a giant hug–so I get why certain kiddos love them😉
The tellers at Wells Fargo banks. Not them personally but their training. I’ve had to withdraw 500$ once a year for my in-laws (they’re from the UK and currency exchanging is one of those seemingly impossibly complicated things for them to handle…I digress). Anyway, the friendly chatty tellers always ask me what I plan to do with my cash. I don’t know if I’m old school or just a private person but what the fuck? I am not required to disclose what my spending habits are and how the fuck is it socially acceptable to even ask? Is this an American bank thing or just WF? Being a non-confrontational person, I politely lie to them, rather than tell them that it is none of your business. I know they are just doing their jobs but it always feels like a nosy overstep.
I’ve never had a bank teller ask me what I’m using my money for. That’s fucking weird.
Do you feel like they’re profiling you and that’s why they’re asking?
Wow, surprisingly I never thought of that angle. I always assumed they asked everyone and never complained about my experience except to my husband. Yes they totally could be profiling me because it happened at three different branches (which is why I thought it was the way they do business). Adding insult to injury is the fact that they were also all asian women. Come on, we’re on the same damn team!
I don’t want to be jumping to conclusions, but I’m a boring looking white woman and I used to have a friend who wrote checks with the memo “For Services Rendered 😉 ” and no one ever asked anything at the bank.
That you’re getting questions from people on just a cash withdrawal? Why the fuck are they asking you.
When I was in grad school, I’d withdraw $1500-2000 for summer research cash for taking overseas and even then no one asked what I was using the money for.
I’ve never been asked about my banking business in my life, except once I was cashing a check and my friend wrote in the memo line “for Stevie Nicks tickets” so the teller said to have a good time 🙂
I’d be pretty tempted to say something like “cocaine and hookers”, although, that could possible get me arrested so…
But, yeah, that’s fucked up, it’s kinda private/personal.
Well, shit, and here I was thinking I had an original joke.
Or it’s that great minds think alike!
I’m probably just paraphrasing Bender from Futurama…
I don’t think I have the luxury of joking about illegal activity. I can however make it uncomfortable for the next teller that pulls that shit on me “Dildos are terribly expensive these days. But self-care is so important, don’t you agree?”
“gotta work off that stress somehow!”
Fucking bingo. That’s the one.
Careful there, you’re not Matt Gaetz.
Just tell them it’s for hookers and blow. Then memorize the look on their faces so you’ll always have something to laugh about.
Believe me, that is not common. In the run-up to buying this apartment I was stashing away all my extra cash and did well in the stock market. Timing is everything. About a week before the closing I dumped all of it into my non-interest-bearing checking account. The day of the closing I wrote out a withdrawal slip for an amount in the six figures and presented it to a teller and asked for a cashier’s check. She gave me this look like “You have this much money just lying around in a checking account?” But she silently checked my balance and confirmed I did, and handed the cashier’s over and to a word was exchanged. I thought at the very least I’d have to spend the morning filling out all kinds of paperwork about the origin and destination of these funds but no, I got the check, folded it in half, stuffed it in my front pocket, and boarded a subway train and headed to the closing.
Bob Costas.
He’s a fucking shitstain of a human being. He spent a lot of years based in St. Louis and he would openly cheat on his wife.
Is he still on air? I remember him making the Olympics a more drab affair in the ’90s (along with John Tesh, of all people, anchoring women’s gymnastics ???), but I somehow thought he’d retired. Or maybe I can’t distinguish him from Dick Clark.
Either way, damn was he cheesy.
There is a gigantic difference between the tangy joy of sour cream, and the fucking nasty and only slightly edible wallpaper paste which is Greek yogurt.
I really fucking can’t stand people who are super picky. I don’t mean people who like their steak medium rare instead of rare. I mean people who are super picky about everything. There’s always some goddamned thing that is never right for them–that they insist be changed for no other reason than they completely lack the capacity to just accept shit the way it is. You know what? The world doesn’t have to bend to your arbitrary will, and I sure as shit don’t have to either.
Yeah with the super duper picky people, I’m like for the love of fuck just give it a rest and get over things.
This was a while ago, but it left a lasting impression…
Was in a Subway, and this guy in line had very specific details for how his sub was to be made that probably increased the labor ten fold or so. Like, the different meats couldn’t touch each other, and had to be separated by individual vegetable toppings, the mayonnaise had to go twixt something and something, and the mustard twixt something and something else, the cheese had to go on top of something but under something else.
it was absurd.
I’ve only been to a Subway maybe half a dozen times in my life ( #blessed) and once there was a guy in front of me who tried to go “off-menu.” I don’t think he was entirely sane. I remember he was adamant that they had herb-crusted tilapia if you knew to ask for it and that he got it there all the time. Those Subway employees have the patience of Job.
I’m watching Hot Shots! the movie, and just realized Lloyd Bridges admiral character is a dead on for Trump.
My dislikes/loathes;
Irrational: foods with a “snot blob in mucous” texture–i.e. peach “fruit on the bottom” yogurt, rice pudding, bread pudding, or old-fashioned oatmeal.
I try them again, every few years, and EVERY single time, as soon as they hit the middle of my tongue, I have to spit them out, because the texture makes me gag so hard I can’t get them swallowed.
Don’t know why. And it’s JUST the “mushy” textures like peach–if there’s ANY semblance of a crunchy texture–like raspberry, strawberry, or pomegranate, it’s FINE, and I can eat it with no problem.
Steel cut oats?
AWESOME.
But overnight rolled oats?
*Hork City* for some reason,no matter HOW much I want to like them!🙃
And the somewhat rational;
Poorly mixed sound.
I got spoiled yeeeeears ago, when I worked at the Bryant Lake Bowl.
My friend who I worked the most shifts with was… well, he was a total sound geek, who had a FABULOUS ear for sound engineering, and he mixed the BLB’s board so that for every show, there wouldn’t be a bad seat in the house.
No matter how loud a band wanted to be, he balanced the boards so that you could *hear* the music.
And all the time I spent working with him, makes it so that there are certain times when I’m out at a bar/venue, when I have to literally put my hands on the edges of the seat & hold on, so that I don’t storm up to the sound booth, push the tech out of their seat, and start mixing the damn thing myself!
Because once you’ve gotten used to good sound? shitty sound balancing which makes the ceiling tiles & HVAC systems *vibrate* are entirely unacceptable, in ANY venue…
The problem was, I knew this friend back in my early 20’s… at the same time I was house-sitting for my co-worker & her husband…
Not only was her husband a completely lovely food hound & talented amateur chef… he was also a total audiophile (and an electrical engineer & Ham Radio enthusiast–so he KNEW how it all worked🤣).
He was a sound aficionado to the point of having a completely custom sound system in his vehicle–with the top of the line manufacturer’s system in hers… so that when his vehicle was out of commission for any reason, there was always a “reasonably high-quality backup” for him to drive**😆😂🤣
And between working with the BLB friend, and getting exposed to such AWESOME music-listening/high quality sound whenever I house-sat (because OF COURSE the electrical engineer had surround sound hooked up to the TV, annnnnd a whole-house speaker system for the music he played in the library!💖), I got completely spoiled for perfectly-mixed sound by the time I was 25, and loathed most of the “dance”/”club” scene forever after😉
**When my co-worker’s husband got rear-ended by a distracted driver, it took months for his SUV to be back up to snuff….
it took FAR longer for the sound-system repairs, than it did for the vehicle repairs… iirc, somewhere between 5-6 months total.
Meaning she got to drive the then-popular/trendy rental vehicle they had the use of, for those months–because it came with shitty “rental car” speakers, which made him feel like his ears were bleeding as he tried to listen to his beloved classical😉🤣
Okra is gross unless it’s in gumbo or fried: something that takes away that slimy texture.
That’s not irrational at all. My omnivorish ways should be well-known by now and it’s one of the few things I can’t stomach. My husband’s parents grew up in the South, made it all the time, and he loves it so every so often I get asked to make some for hm. I’ve made it at least a dozen different ways and none of it is palatable to me. It’s too bad because apparently okra is very good for you.
Fireworks. They’ve already fucking started.
Also people who live in the suburbs (or anywhere outside the city) and complain about things like trees, grass, or wildlife. Fuck off back to the 67th floor with that.
Oh fuck fireworks. I love a good show, but I swear every asshole in the state spent their first covid stimulus check last summer on hundreds of dollars of fireworks.
