What’s your favorite critter? [NOT 8/6/23]

Hi, friends!

What’s your favorite critter/critters to see?

I love the chonky opossum I sometimes see in the back of the yard. I hope they eat tons of bugs. I also get super excited when I find a praying mantis.

So what is it? Squirrel? Fox? Trash panda? Butterfly? Ladybug? Lightning bug? Neighbor’s cat?

  1. Not sure if this counts as a “critter” but I do love when deer come running through my parents’ yard. They live near a bird sanctuary and they get a pretty good variety of wildlife coming by. (The downside is ticks, of course; my son picked one up earlier this spring while at grandma’s house!)

      • Their height and length isn’t much less than our dog, but I was surprised to read they typically weigh a lot less than her weight.

I think part of it is they have a lot of fluff, and also they are a lot more active than our dog, who lies around most of the time.

  2. next doors cat….least i assume its a cat

i mostly know it as the paw of doom

theres a part of the fence that has just enough of a gap for him to smoosh his face against the floor to see and a paw to swipe through….so he does whenever one of my cats forgets to leave enough distance….so he does….shits hilarious

also pretty funny watching my token catnip offerings get yoinked if i put them within reach

  3. For the past eight years I thought I was seeing beavers swimming in Lake Washington… last week I found out that they are actually nutria an invasive species from South America. Basically giant water rats. Far less cute a concept. Ignorance was bliss.

Nutria may be misidentified as beavers or muskrats, especially when swimming, but the resemblances are superficial.
