Who thought this was a good idea? [NOT 2/1/21]

this would terrify kid me

Hi friends! Happy Saturday!

I stopped by the mall earlier and at some point in the least month or two, a fur and leather store has opened up. Kinda feels like an encapsulation of the economy of the last 9 months (rich people are doing fine and can afford a new mink coat, everyone else can fuck right off).

But I digress.

The fur/leather store is literally next door to the build-a-bear workshop. Where kids pick out a bear and it “comes to life.” Hey kids, you can build a new stuffed friend here but next door they make coats out of them instead!

Of all the places to put the store… just was not what I expected.

How’s your weekend going?

  1. I haven’t seen that sort of bizarre juxtapositioning, but I’ve seen a couple new restaurants opening up. I’m thinking maybe wait a month or three?

Took down my award-winning Grinch display today. Sigh. Oh, well, the Grinch is in my heart all year long.

  2. huh…i thought fur went out of fashion over here in the first world
(which is why it was pretty surprising to me to find out we have…uhhh had.. a fuck load of mink farms here….was kinda wondering where the market for that was….anyhoo…none of the poor little critters survived the rona…. well.. none of the poor little critters survived us finding out they can transmit the rona anyways….it dont sit well with me to kill animals you dont plan to eat)
anyhoo…weekend going fine here….im doing as little as possible….aaaand eating noodles coz my local asian supermarket finally got restocked…and they have the best instant noodles

    • I have mixed thoughts on fur and leather. Do I have leather shoes and a leather purse? Yes. Have I bought any leather products in the last 3 years? No. But that’s the beauty of leather — it can last for fucking ever if it’s maintained.

Fur on the other hand… I have never wanted to own fur. I understand the functional necessity in some climates, but there’s no functional need for anyone in St. Louis to need a fur coat. I really didn’t realize it was still a “thing” for a status symbol, but apparently so.

      • im fine with leather…i eat cows…(or well..cattle in general)seems a waste to not use the bits you dont eat
fur in too many cases involves animals i dont eat tho…which for me puts it somewhere in the unnessecary animal cruelty pile..

    • Yeah I know there were a few empty stores earlier this year, so I don’t think it’s a case of
being the only open spot in the mall. Although right there by the atrium is great placement. Also near the entrance to Nordstrom, so probably also a smart choice for the fancy people market.

    • Yeah that was the part that had me going “HUH” more than anything else. I didn’t think fur was that popular anymore and that people bought enough fur to keep a store profitable in a fucking mall!

  3. So… I went to the salon today with my friend and had my hair hacked off. It was down to the middle of my back, and now it just skims my shoulders. It’s the shortest it’s ever been, and I love it!

I used to have a fur coat that I inherited from my grandmother, but my mom would never let me wear it and the skins dried out and it fell apart. Given that the animals involved had been dead for 50 years by the time I got the coat, I didn’t really have a problem with it. I feel like it was more disrespectful to let it fall apart instead of enjoying it.

  4. You open a fur store on this side of the Cascades & best case scenario you have PETA protests, worst case u have red dye bomb attacks.  We only like Douglas or Noble firs.  I can’t say I miss the build a bear & American girl trips w/ my girls but I do miss that joy they had.  Most of our malls are just restaurants & theaters now & some getting condos on top.

    • Build a Bear had a bakery shop in 2019 at this mall and it was so cute. It was basically a place where parents bought iced cupcakes or cookies and the kids got a decorating kit. But also, it was one of those storefronts that whenever you walked by it was adorable because the kids were having so much fun.
