Winter Olympian! [NOT 7/2/26]

Sorry guys if it is a little late as I had a busy day today, just got home and had nothing prepped.

If you had to pick a winter sport then which one would you want to compete in the Olympics?

I don’t have the accuracy or the physical fitness to do biathlon, but that would be the one I would try because of the challenge. Imagine being able to reduce your heart rate after basically sprinting in cross country skies (I have done that–my ears nearly exploded) and being able to shoot five bullseyes and sprint again.

That I think is the toughest sport.

Curling looks easy, but I’ve played a couple of times. It is way more of a challenge than one imagines shoving curling stones on ice.

Even the sweeping requires a rhythm and understanding of how to make the stone “curl.”

Most amateurs in Canada… just end up drinking while playing. And yes, it’s definitely a wypipo thing as I was one of the oddball non white folks who got dragged out to play the sport by his white friends.

My mom hoped for a brief moment that I could have been a male figure skater, but nah. I wanted to play hockey. I needed to learn how to skate and unlike most white Canadian kids at 5 years old, I didn’t learn it from dad so I had to figure skate for two years before they’d let me play hockey. The one thing I actually realized was that figure skating actually made me a better skater than most of my contemporaries. Dad let me put black shoe polish all over my white figure skates in order to make it look less “girly.” Surprisingly, I didn’t get beaten up or attacked because I figure skated. Mostly because I already developed a reputation for being a little “off” and vicious.

Sports or open thread/threat!

  1. Curling would be my sport, but I’m not sure I’m smart enough to learn the rules. I’ve been watching it during the Winter Olympics for decades and I still don’t know what the hell’s going on.

    • I know the basic rules, but some crazy set of skills required. My dad (who never played) loved watching curling. CBC sports used to show these tourneys all the time before TSN jumped in and bought up the TV rights.

  2. Imagine if dog sledding was an Olympic sport (if they let horses in, why not dogs)? I would watch the shit out of that. Drones and GoPros could make it filmable.

If I had to compete, I’d choose long distance speed skating. It looks so satisfying when they get into rhythm. Obviously I am not built for it IRL.

  3. Snowboard slalom is the only sport I could have ever done. Never a good jumper so that scares the crap out of me but I used to be pretty good at flying down Whistler groomers from top to bottom & passing people like a video game. After a few high speed injuries & fatherhood w/ shitty insurance I learned to be a cruiser.

    • I couldn’t survive the high speed stuff. My knees are a bit creaky and I found out that a black diamond ski run in Ontario is like 15 seconds of fun versus 15 minutes of burning aching thighs and high velocity terror at Whistler.

  4. realistically it’d be speed skating…on account of..i can actually skate..tho obviously…not on that level

skeleton looks like it’d be a lot of fun…. but having never tried it yet…. i dont know if my first attempt would result in me having a massive rush and wanting to go again…. or crapping myself and finding a corner to cry in for the next hour…lol
