you may have noticed… [NOT 1/2/21]

CH CH CH CHANGES

Things are a bit different ’round here…most of which have hopefully gone completely unnoticed.

I figured I’d jump in here with an update for a NOT seeing as I can’t see one being written right now but then again I haven’t scrolled through the 17 years of FYCE posts that @elliecoo and her team of foodies have scheduled.

The cache issues should be fixed at least to the point that you won’t be getting any of the hinky issues you’ve been getting for the past month or so. Please let me know if you experience any of them @myopicprophet or email admin@deadsplinter.com

Update on the comment-edit ability:

I will get to it…eventually.

Speed is going to be an issue for some depending on the device, os and browser. Please let me know if you experience severe lag and inform me of the device, os and browser you’re using.

Apple people get the backseat not because I deplore apple and its products and its unenlightened users but because I don’t use apple products making it a lot harder for me to troubleshoot.

Anywho…this is supposed to be an open thread so go ahead and bitch about the inept administration and all its failures especially the inability to proofread your own shit prior to uploading edit your own comments.

The “need to change” changes are almost ready for the “want to change” changes.

  1. OMG, that is fucking hilarious.

Instead of bitching about the admin, I’m going to bitch about the fact that we had to purchase a new TV because the old one suddenly stopped sending digital audio out, for literally no reason.  So, we spend $400 on a TV we had no intention of having to purchase.  I was planning to do the mounting and rearranging of the cable keepers with Mrs. Butcher on Sunday, but she got called into work.  So, we do it tonight.  I get the old TV off, no problem.  We figure out the new arrangements with the cable keeper, no problem.  I go to put the bracket on the back of the new TV…and the GODDAMNED SCREWS ARE TOO SHORT.  I mean, are you fucking kidding me?!  It’s the same brand of TV, but the holes are much deeper and the threads are way the hell down in there.  Why the fuck would you design it like that?  Now, if we had run into this problem on Sunday I would have driven to Home Depot and looked for screws that were long enough.  But, we’re in the middle of a fucking blizzard.  Plus, one off my windshield wipers snapped off so no going anywhere for me.  What am I supposed to do, engage in meaningful conversation with my life mate?  Read a book?  Play with the dog?  Fuck that.  I’m going to watch Fargo on my laptop and pout like the big fucking baby that I am.

Must be an apple tv 😛

    • I hear you!  I bought a super expensive PC for photo/video editing about 3 mos ago after my old machine burned up.  Now this one is crashing every time I edit.  I had to reinstall windows & all my programs & now it’s fucking crashing again!!!!  Drives say they are fine, nothing wrong!!!  It’s under warranty but tech support has been friendly but lame.  I hate Windows & Adobe & Samsung.  Fuck everyone!

      • I had to burn a day diagnosing a work PC. Turns out a lot of PC buy/build sites don’t check that your power supply matches your total demand anymore. What happened next is the graphics card socks so much power that the power supply can’t give which results in voltage suppression. Voltage suppression leads to overcurrent on the motherboard buses and eventual degradation. Cue the blue screen of death and panicked phone calls.

Then I found out the person on that PC had been mining cryptocurrency and basically overloaded that PC for half a year 24/7.

  2. Everything has been working well for me, even on my iPhone. I appreciate all your hard work.

But….any idea why some of us still don’t have the ability to post pics or gifs? It’s not a big deal just curious.

    • No idea tbh. It took head-banging-against-the-wall from dec 2019 to march-ish 2020 to get the text editor functional  and I am afraid to touch it to figure out why a few of you cannot see the image icon. It is on the to-do list though.

      • Thanks for everything Myo, I give u shit because I love you.  I get signed out a lot & today it told me I should change my password because it was compromised on this site?   That was a weird new one!

        • The auto-signout is a security feature. You’ll always be able to sign back in. There are several reasons one might get a compromised password indicator which is also a security feature that really means nothing. You have nothing to worry about there.

I’d explain what the “nothing” is to someone with the handle Lovetimduncan but you don’t make the cut. Sorry 😉

          • I get it, you would definitely have to explain it to a “Duncan” fan.  Although, “nothing” should be easy to explain to Texas sports fans these days.  Kind of like Leafs fans.  Sorry.

    • sonofabitch do I have to embed the gif? I hate iframes.

  3. I’ve never had a problem except for some DUANs on my ancient tablet, and that seems to happen on any site with a bunch of videos.

Otherwise on new Android, windows PCs, iPad it seems perfectly usable. But if you want to break something so I feel included, do what you must.

  4. Thanks, myo. I hope you know how much you’re appreciated ’round here. And for the frequent three-part posts where I lament my formatting and snafus, it’s very much a case of PEMBAC/PICNIC. If I proofread well enough before posting and remembered which platform I was using for embeds and links, it wouldn’t take me three posts to get all the videos to show.

    • Side note: your inclusion of 2Pac’s “Changes” reminds me of being on a Zoom stream at Busboys and Poets where Michael Moore was the guest, waiting for the event to start. They like to play “Changes” as waiting music, and Moore commented on how he liked the Bruce Hornsby [the original track sampled by 2Pac]. The host mentioned it was “Changes” by 2Pac and Moore seemed unfamiliar.
I’m sure several Boomers have no clue about 2Pac or the track, but it just seems so strange to have never heard it? https://youtu.be/cOeKidp-iWo

    • …I fear that isn’t likely but for different reasons than the (gotta-admit-it-would-be-nice) edit window thing…there was some logic to it as I recall but I think the not-changing it part has to do primarily with it making things work for some people who need accessibility features to play nice in order to read things on the site & thus it’s sort of an ain’t-broke-don’t-fix deal at this point

…although now I’m wondering at what point in world history the day/month/year vs month/day/year schism happened & whether it’s like driving on the right…or if more of the world thinks the US is wrong about the date thing?

      • …huh…could have sworn I refreshed the page before typing up my apparently redundant comment…which I’m pretty sure didn’t take me 10mins…ah, well

      • although now I’m wondering at what point in world history the day/month/year vs month/day/year schism happened

if i had to guess i’d say it was likely around the time americans changed zed to zee because their kids wouldn’t learn the alphabet if it didn’t rhyme.

    • I find it kind of charming. I used to do a lot of work for a British company and it’s the same thing, really, except in Commonwealth English you’re saying “the 2nd of February” and in American English you’re saying “February 2nd.” I also like the use of military time, because I’m writing this at 2/2/21 AT 06:22, which is before sunrise where I am, and not 6:22 PM, which is the beginning of sunset.

When I did this work for the British company I set my spellcheck for British/Commonwealth English and sometimes forgot to switch it off. I once sent this long, chatty email to one of my siblings who I don’t talk to as often as I should. He, from his iPhone, sent back a terse, “Did you move 2 England or Australia or something??? When can I come visit???”

  5. Thank you @Myopicprophet, for giving us a welcoming home. As for the supremely organized, prolific, and talented FYCE crew…I think that you should come over to the dark side and join us. Remember, we have a spreadsheet. ⭐🥑💥

      • Have you ever watched “Murdoch Mysteries”? We’re obsessed. They work out of a police station in Toronto circa 1900. The main character is bilingual English/French. His boss is a Yorkshireman (from England) and whenever some suspect has a Québecois connection he’ll say, “The bloody French.” There’s a great episode where the main character and his sidekick go to Newfoundland. Since the sidekick is a Newfie native he’s sent undercover and pulls out this amazing local dialect so he can talk to the natives. The accents are all over the place. Some people speak like they were teleported from the dining room at Downton Abbey and others like they grew up in an Iowa cornfield. I suppose this reflects what Toronto must have been like 120 years ago.

I have many Canadian relatives and used to go up there quite a bit. From NYC it only takes about 6–7 hours to get to Montréal, depending on weather and conditions at the border (now, sadly, closed) and in fact my first job out of college was working as a tour guide escorting elderly vacationers up to Montrèal. The Quèbecois-inflected Canadian English would linger for a couple of days, prompting people to ask why I was speaking so strangely.

        • I have seen a few episodes of Murdoch Mysteries and enjoyed them. I haven’t gone out of my way to watch it as some say I should.

I know quite a few people who grew up in Newfoundland and there are some I cannot understand a word they are saying.

  6. Hey!
I don’t use as many features as much as a lot of other users, but I just wanted to say thanks for keeping this place running, I kinda like it here.

    🙂

  7. Is there a way for a reply to a comment to be off center or something? It can get confusing when scrolling down and having no idea what the replier is referring to, and the only way to tell is the timestamp.

    K thx.

    • …generally speaking if you click on reply the resulting comment is intended relative to the one that’s being replied to

…sometimes, though, that doesn’t happen (whether due to some sort of glitch or due to accidental “user error”) in which case they start a sort of orphan thread that isn’t indented or necessarily close to the comment they intend to respond to (depending on how many others have been made between the two)

…so in theory comments replying to the same comment share the same level of indentation & sit between it & the next un-indemted one…but in practice it can be hit & miss?

…or do you mean something more pronounced?

…I know our over-worked technical department is putting in an arguably unhealthy amount of effort in ways that don’t necessarily show up on our end but from what I understand short of ditching the current plugin (not sure if we’d be able to migrate the comments) & moving the whole thing over to something like disqus (which comes with its own shortcomings & compromises) I think major changes are harder to implement than they might appear for all that there are some we’d probably all like one way or another

      • …they seem to show up on my phone (except for the exceptions like I tried to describe above) it but maybe that depends on some device/browser stuff…or whatever refuses to give me that image button decided to do me a deal on the indent thing

…it’s a bit of a mystery to me to be honest but I tried to explain how it seemed to work on my end…apologies if it’s nonsense from others’ perspectives

    • …I’m on an android phone, too…not samsung but I generally end up using chrome…any chance it might be the browser or is that the same one you’d be using?
