It’s the season for shopping where the best gifts are given to yourself! Kidding… sort of. I find the holiday retail ads so annoying as they bomb you with ads that have you believe that the best gifts are the ones you buy at their stores.
I’m doing my best to avoid this bullshit, by not buying anything unless I need it like food or try to get it locally. Part of it is that I don’t like funding corps whose leaders support the Trump Admin (maybe not the tariffs, but I don’t see no fucking Jeff Bozos WaPo op-eds decrying trade tariffs because he’s 1 a coward and 2 doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.) He’s more upset that Mayor Zohran Mamdani is going to make him 2% more in taxes on his expensive and numerous NYC properties.
As you might have guessed, I’m pretty much ignoring Black Friday and other bullshit sales. I will get my sisters small gifts because I am not a total cheap monster, but that’s pretty much it for me.

…I suffer from a weird condition where I can think of things I’d like that I don’t have all the time…unless someone asks what I want for christmas or my birthday…& then I have no clue what those might be?
…only have vague ideas for about half the ones I need to pick for others but with luck list-shaped clues may yet show up…otherwise dangerous things like visits to bookshops might happen…generally try for something people will get some use out of unless there’s an excuse for it to be the frivolous sort of silly, I guess…&…books count as useful…or the right one could?
…so far that seems to have gone down pretty well based on what feedback I get…although…I was never as assiduous as I could have been with cards & that sort of extended to thank you letters…which I know isn’t unusual now but based on people I know…if you or your kids send handwritten thank you letters…your stock with people who buy you presents is…like…tesla vs a.n. other EV company?
My wife bought herself an extravagent item today. She deserves it. I stayed home and watched football. I deserved it.
I try to get most gifts at the farmers market or craft fairs, or failing that at local stores. I don’t shop for more than a few people, so it’s not that big a deal.
