Costume Party [NOT 10/31/25]

When this posts, I will be out with my son trick-or-treating on the cold (and windy!) streets.

He’s had some years where he really has big costume ideas, and then other years where he’s kinda like “whatever.” He’s been an apple, a ghost, a banana, a vampire, Green Lantern, Bart Simpson and now a skeleton this year. Pretty basic this time around! But he’s still at the age where the candy is the thing.

In my day, I was a bunch of stuff, from an X-wing pilot (!) when I was like 3 or 4, a king, a TV set, a wizard, a hand-made baseball card, and more that I can’t remember.

The baseball card, in particular, was a pretty wild one. My mom drew it on two giant pieces of posterboard and then I wore it, front and back. All I was missing was the tooth-chipping gum.

So what’s your favorite or most memorable Halloween costume of all time? And/or what are you doing on this holiday weekend?

  1. In 1995, I took a black witch outfit and had grown out a scraggly mustache, grabbed a wooden mallet so I went out as Judge Lance Ito. I was pretty much the only person who could pull that off.

  2. I’m still very proud of making myself a toilet costume as a tween. I wore a box on my body as the water tank, flusher included! And I held a smaller box in front of me as the toilet bowl. I suspended plastic wrap on the inside and glued “used” crumpled toilet paper with smears of brown and yellow to it. The lid was attached to a cord on the water tank portion so that I could extend the bowl forward and the lid would open for all the treats.

My favorite adult costumes were Ruby Rhod and Tron: Legacy. The Tron ones took me forever! I bought black jumpsuits and sewed all the lines on with reflective ribbon and glow sticks. I even made those circular weapons by sticking glow sticks onto donut frisbees. My biggest regret is not taking pictures that night. I was hosting a Halloween party and it slipped my mind.

This year I copped out and dressed up as Ms Rachel. I’ve been talking in her voice all week which my kids find both hilarious and then really annoying 😂 I may never stop.

  3. My friends and I trick or treated into our teen years, which coincided with the release of the Lord of the Rings movies, which OF COURSE we made costumes and went to midnight showings opening day of. Because yes, we were that level of dorks. So we had our LOTR costumes (half-assed as some of ours were) for a few years and I think those were my best costume years.
