In honor of the great battle for Portland, I bring you one of the city’s favorite underground bands from the 80’s. Listen carefully to the lyrics, it sure seems like somethings never change?
This one is a little more upbeat but the theme remains the same…
The band was named “Northwest Band of the Year” in 1985 by Seattle’s Rocket music magazine and the Oregonian. (I miss the Rocket!)
The music industry tried to label them a ska band but they resisted this label. They preferred the label “Original razor-tight horn lines ride upon endless clots of tropical polyrhythms ranging from ska and reggae to harder funk fusions.”
However you want to label them, they never stopped being political & keeping it weird.
Stay safe out there for tonight we are all Portlandiers!
I remember Johnny Q being played on the one alt-rock station out here. Good stuff. I probably still have a live CD of theirs around somewhere…
