Some sad news: Janice Longone, one of the country’s pre-eminent food historians and archivists, has died:

This is the life I wish I had lived!
Also, and I’m treading on farscy’s turf here, a man has been killed at a Highland Games in the Netherlands, not in Scotland.
You have to be super-cautious when the nearby Highland Games moves on to the hammer throw part of the program. The Queen Mother, who spent her childhood at Glamis Castle up in Scotland, was a huge fan of the Highland Games (one of the ones in Scotland) and I think to this day the Highland Games play an outsized role in British Royal Family life. Kind of like taking money from dodgy foreigners, which Princes Charles and Andrew have honed to a fine art.
Speaking of the British Royal Family taking things, I once read what is seemingly a fairly famous anecdote about Queen Mary, QEII’s grandmother, the Queen Mother’s mother-in-law, and the wife of King George V. They were in the habit of going on tours around the UK to visit local grandees and attend openings of bridges and hospitals. They would stay in the grandest house in the area. This is the plot of the first “Downton Abbey” movie, by the way, if you haven’t seen it.
In real life, Queen Mary would take a look around and settle in with the wife of the owner for a little private chat. Things would go this way:
Queen Mary: That vase over there is extraordinary. Can you tell me about it?
The Duchess of Bloomingshire: Thank you, your Majesty. Yes, it’s from the 18th century. It was made for the Duke’s great great great grandfather, the 3rd Duke, in 1746.
An uncomfortable silence. Queen Mary continues looking her hostess in the eye. The light bulb goes off.
The Duchess of Bloomingshire: And I was wondering, Your Majesty, that since you appreciate it so, if you wouldn’t mind if I presented it to you, as a memento of your visit with us?
Queen Mary: That would be most thoughtful.
Apparently loads of things now in Buckingham Palace came there in this manner. When you see the public rooms, which are quite grand, and filled to bursting with all kinds of knick knacks and bibelots, much of it might have been “thoughtful gifts” obtained by Queen Mary’s relentless ransacking of some of the finest houses in early-20th-century Britain.
That story of Queen Mary flexing her power to take what others covet makes my blood boil even though it’s the Richest stealing from the Rich. I hate greedy people who can afford to buy almost anything but are so unsatisfied or unimaginative that they resort to taking what others hold dear instead.
You would think, with this being pretty common knowledge, that Elizabeth would at this point start having her people comb through the pile of shit that they stole from other people and return it to the families. I mean, it’s not like she has an actual job to do.
…she’s getting on a bit these days…& arguably does have a job…debatable whether it’s one anyone ought to have but maybe less so that she’s been good at it in a way it’s hard to see a successor managing to be in this day & age
…I mean…your point is sound…but it’s maybe easier to direct at the rest of the family than the one who’s likely not going to be around all that much longer?
Well, yeah, that’s kind of my point. She could say to her people, “find all the artifacts my grandmother stole from people and figure out how we can get them returned. I’m too busy pretending to lead the country.”
…oddly enough I don’t generally find myself arguing the pro-royalty position other than hereabouts but by way of devil’s advocate…there’s always been a bit more to how being the monarch works…& when it comes to managing a generational wealth in the soft power sense she’s been pretty good at staying in step
…they only just got around to not calling the elgin marbles the elgin marbles…so…we might live to see the royal family divest itself of some trappings & chattels…but I wouldn’t bet on liz doing the same
…I forget the name of the comedian but someone was once asked to give a overseas visitor to london advice & responded “go to the british museum…it’s where we have all your stuff”…& it’s still largely true…there’s more than the museum can display by a considerable margin
…there’s even a place that’s basically two or three decent-sized houses knocked through that just houses the personal collection of a guy called sir john soames…think of the sort of stuff that makes people say “that belongs in a museum”…except he just brought it back to his place
…not to say it makes it ok…but like any pecking order it’s not entirely a surprise that the royals would skim the cream off those kinds of collectors…so everyone was clear about everyone’s status…& as an island generally giving things back isn’t something that’s really been a signature move…with the arguable exception of the colonies/commonwealth?
That might be easier said than done. According to this article (which is worth a full and thorough read) her “collecting” took many forms, and it might be impossible to know how exactly things came into her hands and how willing the seller/gifter/”permanent loaner” was at the time. Here’s a great quote:
File this under “headlines I thought I’d never see and did not want to.”

This is pathetic.
After the People’s Convoy disbanded, this offshoot headed to D.C.
Quotes:
Their demands are both insistent and vague. When asked for specifics, the members will say that they want representatives to recognize that they work for the people and address their grievances.
Many in the splinter group say they are anti-socialist and anti-big government and anti anything they think is anti-American. Their food and gas expenses are funded, they say, by other Americans who feel the same way they do. The group’s brochure solicits donations through Cash App, Venmo and Zelle. Riddell estimates the group has raised about $73,000 since forming.
They don’t believe mainstream news and get their information from far-right websites. They also follow each other’s live streams (there are lots of live streams). In their shared distrust of government and politicians and media, they found a community of like-minded souls.
There have also been ongoing hostilities with members of another offshoot of the People’s Convoy who have accused the 1776 Restoration Movement of having members who are convicted sex offenders. Riddell said there was a former member of the group who had been convicted of child molestation in Indiana but that that person has left. That hasn’t stopped the bickering, online and in person, between the two groups.
Lines up neatly with this:

I mean, why engage with a media organization that might possibly call you on your bullshit, when instead you can just have your bullshit cosigned and broadcast with a propaganda outfit.
Good luck with your flight! We’re flying out on Tuesday morning. Time will tell if that’s fact or just wishful thinking. We’ve got air tags in our luggage and have signed up for a specific time slot to go through security 3hrs before our flight. Not much more we can do.

every Monday, I am this turtle…
I may have this wrong, but I think the ancient Indus River Valley civilization had a creation myth which involves the world sitting on the back of a giant turtle. Every time it moves, there’s an earthquake.
And Terry Pratchett probably stole that lore for his wonderful series Discworld.
Don’t tease me with Pokémon! I can’t wait for the next instalment due in November.

So weird that the Parlimentarian can block affordable insulin — and 57 votes isn’t enough — but somehow 51 votes for lower taxes on hedge funds is fine. Odd how that works.
