The Meltdown

I’m pinch-hitting for RIP, and I’ve noticed a bit of a theme. See if you can spot it.

  1. …ta muchly…my morning appreciates the slack & the person I’m accompanying to a surgical appointment does, too

…on the halligan thing I threw this at the DOT probably too late yesterday to be an obvious place to find it now & the piece is a pretty amazing read

EXCLUSIVE: One Saturday afternoon in October, my phone lit up with a notification.I glanced down at the message.“Anna, Lindsey Halligan here,” it began. So began my text exchange with the woman who is prosecuting the president's perceived political enemies.www.lawfaremedia.org/article/anna…

    Anna Bower (@annabower.bsky.social) 2025-10-20T22:09:02.236Z

…& for a chaser emptywheel has a pretty good case for both halligan’s barrels being loaded with duds

    https://www.emptywheel.net/2025/10/20/lindsey-halligans-grand-jury-violation-with-love-to-aileen-cannon/

…short-ish version…by the logic that had jack smith’s run at the improper handling of classified material thrown out in florida…it was a violation of the laws concerning grand juries for her to have been in the room when those convened much less bought the bill of goods she was hawking…more than once when you loop in the stuff she pulled the signal seppuku routine about…& while that was her tish james “bombshell” the parallel arguments laid out by comey’s defense cite people like jeff “I’ve been called a surrogate a time or two” sessions as examples of prior perjury…haven’t read the whole thing but the lady that’s “mueller she wrote” did a sort of “remember some guys” bit on bluesky & that had jeff, scott pruitt, tom price & mnuchin as…among other things…avenues to be explored in discovery

…so there’s some stuff in there that’s looking like it’s tailored to box the supreme court into having to explicitly contradict itself to make the outcome they’re being asked for happen…& also the other sort of flare being sent up to encourage the prosecution to cut bait before the bite-you-in-the-ass routine really clamps down on them…or might be…if you flirt with optimism a little?

      • …appreciate it…they have kind of a sequence of that stuff going on this week the way some timetables have overlapped but…fingers crossed…knock on wood…all that sort of thing…hopefully the better sort of news afterwards is in the predicted list of probable outcomes the qualified people are of the opinion it should be…which doesn’t sound as good as all that but actually would be pretty amazing when you think about it…if you still believe in the conspiracy theory called science & “western medicine”, anyway?

        • Good luck. If it’s any consolation, and to make this all about me, I have three appointments this week across three different medical specialties. Luckily we have excellent insurance. In fact, I think that might be prt of the problem. If I were on Medicaid or had no insurance at all the hospital conglomerate would be legally obliged to care for me, but I doubt I would have been signed up for so many “JUST IN CASE” tests and the follow-ups. I can prove it, acually, but the story is too boring. But who doesn’t love a good MRI and my Spanglish is near fluent at this point.

          • You don’t have to prove it to me. My MIL has Medicare plus supplemental insurance (which pretty much cover everything), and the number of procedures her doctors “prescribe” that are completely useless is astonishing. Crap that’s simply not worth doing to a 90-year-old, like MRIs and CT scans that aren’t looking for anything, they’re “just in case.” Most cancer screenings are unnecessary at that age (she’d never survive treatment), but they do them anyway because they can bill for them.

            • What pisses me off is that most of this could be taken care of during a 10- or 15-minute phone call. I used to do this during covid but now, I’m guessing, the insurance companies have tightened up and won’t reimburse except for face-to-face visits. I have mobility issues so I have to get a wheelchair-capable Uber (those aren’t cheap) and Better Half has to go with me, interrupting his day. To cover their tracks they insist on “taking labs.” “But I just had my blood drawn [in another department] four days ago…” “We just want to see if anything has changed.”

The CEO of this notionally non-for-profit medical-industrial group “earned” (received) over $7 million as of 2023. Little Sisters of the Poor this ain’t.

  2. For a bunch of super tough males, they’re a bunch of delicate flowers. Every day is a Chernobyl meltdown. Imagine if something horrible happens.

    • …there was a campaign ad one time that leaned pretty hard on how you didn’t want [candidate] to be the one they were waking up in the middle of the night to tell they had the two minutes warning to hit the button back or whatever

…I guess their pitch is they wouldn’t have to wake him up because he’d be wide awake rage-posting despite their best efforts to cocoon him in a nice, safe, adulatory bubble like a pocket universe…provided it happened after whatever time your mother tried to tell you nothing good happened after…if it was during office hours & he wasn’t talking he’d probably be mid-nap…but…that’s a false equivalence by their fragile rules of epistemic engagement…ipso alter facto…& such…QED pwnd radlib grandma tears ensue

…brave new world that has such…wonders…isn’t

      …innit
[…there’s a nerd gag I’m not making here as a gesture of…possibly goodwill…possibly the quality one old bill once claimed to be unstrained…YMMV]

…not to be all…all’s well that ends well

…but this one was new to me & if I don’t add it here I’ll only end up filling a whole other comment to find an excuse to…so?

  3. Fuck, even my former execubots were tougher than the Trump Admin… not by much though. They melted down over a single piece of bad news, not because they found out that employees thought they were stupid arrogant pieces of shit.

  4. I had a little happy dance when George Springer saved the Jays/ended the Mariners season last night.

  5. Kickback is back!

    https://nysfocus.com/2025/09/05/home-care-bid-rigging-skoufis

This is a little old but this news broke right around the time Krazy Kat endorsed Mamdani. This was extremely distracting but it really shouldn’t have been: He won the Demoratic Mayoral primary fair and square and as such should have enjoyed state and federal support, but unfortunately he’s under the age of 70, not a hack, and actually somewhat left of center. FREE BUSES? Didn’t Cuomo supporter Michael Bloomberg propose the very same thing during his illegal three-term mayoralty? (Mayors are term-limited to two twerms.)

So a rigged, no-bid $11 billion contract to a supremely unqualified supplier with Kickback’s fingerprints all over it. In her world I think the skim is 10%, so $1.1 billion to her. Not a bad day, all in all.

When Mildred Pierce is done milking the New York State cow dry, no doubt we’ll find her next taking Duolingo German classes in Liechtenstein or Zurich.

  6. Moe news from Hokey Pokey. This is about restoration of more Amtrak service between NYC and Albany, no doubt to facilitate the transfer of “generous support” from residents of the City to the Executive Mansion:

“The riders had to pay the price,” Hochul said on Monday. “This [the repair of a tunnel damagd by Hurricane Sandy THIRTEEN YEARS AGO] had to be done, no way around it, but what happened was three daily round trips between New York City and Albany had to be canceled.” But, she said, she kept demanding that Amtrak and the MTA work together to find a solution. “I don’t take no for an answer,” the governor said.

I’m sure there’s more than one person wandering Albany and missing a right hand because they said no.

But if that were a non white he’d be getting the death penalty in 2 seconds.

      Jesus, that Reddit thread.
