To engage with this in good faith, if Trump etc wanted to swing the midterms they'd only have to focus on some of the seats. If you take Swing Left's 19 flip and 14 must hold, that's 33 districts.

Eoin Higgins (@eoinhiggins.bsky.social) 2026-01-15T20:16:10.837Z

Assuming not all locations are necessary to repress the vote at you're looking at 10-20 a district, maybe? Even if you say 20 that's 660 locations, we can up it to 700 for the sake of argument.

Eoin Higgins (@eoinhiggins.bsky.social) 2026-01-15T20:16:10.838Z

There is an infrastructure there for protest and intimidation from the far right. Add to that, hypothetically, the gov deploying ICE to harass people at the polls and in the area. It's not as huge a lift as 150k polling places around the country

now you’re suppressing GOP voters who are more likely to show up day of

there’s a reason why the GOP want trump to STFU about mail-in ballots; there was evidence that his bitching and moaning about them in 2020 actually suppressed his own vote share!

like you go through all the trouble of mobilizing the troops and invoking the Insurrection Act and making people scared to leave their homes and then WHOOPS! — all mail-in/early voting! and your base is the main people who show up and they can’t vote!

American cops killed 1096 people last year, the total for every nation in europe combined was 47.

Cite for these stats. Not doubting them, just want a cite to use. Thanks

(@treeesq.bsky.social) 2026-01-19T18:59:20.247Z

I went with a quick list. Different sources give different numbers but every US figure is around 1100. Some a few more, some a few less.

For European countries there appears to be little variation among sources because the numbers are just…lower.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_annual_rates_and_counts_for_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers

This site is comprehensive and suggests the figure for 2025 was over 1300. I suspect that the difference is cases where there is some hair to split about how a death is categorized. https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/

for reference, France’s population is 20% that of the US

French police may be the most trigger-happy in western Europe, and kill about 10 to 15 people per year

Marseille, France’s second-largest and most violent city, averages about 30 murders per year

don't forget the part where, due to how healthcare is tied to work and you can be fired for any reason what so ever, getting too uppity means you and anyone that depends on you for healthcare can die for something as simple as being seen at a protest.

The Jonestown Jamboree (@thejonestownjamboree.neocities.org) 2026-01-19T18:44:54.037Z

oh, sorry, i should have added "presuming your job gives you the option for healthcare and you make enough to be able to afford said healthcare".my bad for not accurately explaining to the euros who don't know how bad it can be.

When the cops kill someone here it’s barely even news. I do not think people understand that. Nothing grinds to a halt except in rare cases that are, statistically, exceptional.
[…]
Even though there are reactionaries everywhere and the media tends to make excuses for cops in any case, in Europe it’s news when cops kill someone. It’s a thing people notice because it doesn’t happen daily. Questions are even asked, sometimes.

Here? 3 or 4 per day, who can even keep track.

in america our media treats police shootings the way other countries’ domestic media treats pedestrian deaths

  1. I totally think it’s fair for Euros to be looking down on us right now — we have more than earned it!

But I also think there’s way too much “well it wouldn’t happen here” and like, Reform is gonna win the next British election and AfD might win in Germany and Le Pen has already nearly captured France and the literal single biggest reason the right didn’t win in Canada was because Trump started talking about it like it was gonna be the 51st state and man … they’re organized and trying to win everywhere.

    • …I mean…mostly yes to all of that…but…it’s like “the economy”, innit?

…anyone who says they can be sure of how things will break in times to come based on things that already happened…is banking on people agreeing with them being right in sufficient numbers to pass for that being what happened…&…we are approaching some sort of all-bets-are-off event(s) horizon…like…the greenland thing is at risk of doing to the AfD what him winning did for maple-flavor-MAGA-syrup?

🇩🇪 GERMANY— Far-right AfD Leader Alice Weidel: “Double standards… We’ve heard years of whining about Putin violating international law — now those same critics are strangely quiet when Trump does what they criticized Putin for in Venezuela and Greenland.”Incalculable damage.

…&…that might even be in danger of catching on on the continent?

That both the RN of France and the AfD of Germany are backing a hard line on Greenland against Trump is terrible news for Trump.Creates a united front in Europe and dramatically cuts his influence in Europe through the far-right.

The Trump hate in Europe has become a liability to European far right parties that previously were seeking his support, his latest move trying to annex Greenland is making even his staunchest ally,German AfD distance themselves from him. The same thing is happening in Italy, France and Spain.Good

…not to mention…well…I haven’t really spotted it in anywhere reputable enough to necessarily know it to be a respectable or respected claim…but…well…it’s not gone un-noticed that when he was sending out invites & asking for the billion dollar deposit to his new “my own UN but with blackjack & underage hookers” gentleman’s club so he can get prizes for cheating at the peace-golf-championship-of-being-the-only-person-who-matters annual “oh, just let him or he’ll be insufferable” invitational…he put his boy vlad down on the guestlist in the red-carpet column…or that holding ukraine to basically *be* the line…is the more comfortable way that…buffers

Most effective way to defend Greenland? Commit to defeating Russia.

It would destroy Putin, Trump’s main ally & the idol he models himself on. Restore European self confidence & moral clarity. Cut off support to Reform, AfD and all the other septic populist parties poised to tear 🇬🇧 & 🇪🇺 apart…

Ultimately, it will be the multinational mission to Greenland's task to take down as many US military aircraft and sink as many US navy ships as possible before #Greenland is fully occupied by the American invaders. The end of NATO. The beginning of a hybrid war with the United States.

…& part of that is that the thing a bunch of europe has talked about in terms of a bazooka adjacent to the tariff stuff is a majority deal…so the hold outs can’t hold out against it…& collective punishment gets some pretty forceful reciprocating mechanisms coming back on it where those numbers he needs in his comfort zone can get royally fucked with…in ways the convening of the CEOs he’s pencilled in for sometime this week could…if they were honest with him in public & private in concert…wreck his whole shit about

…probably won’t…but…meloni or whoever wouldn’t vote to fuck with things like the amount of federal debt the EU holds in aggregate…on the basis he’s been known to notice a basis point when it moves against him…so…since she couldn’t stop it…now…she might vote for it anyway just to stay in the lanes she needs to

…not saying that’s the straight dope & the real score if that whistle blows…just…the things that are in contention are about as fully-explicable as an improbability based method of hyperspatial transitional displacement…heart of gold style

…& maybe it would help to draw up a pratchett-prophecy list of things with “nice” odds in the sense of *precisely* 1,000,000 to 1…since those are well known to be near certainties by the laws of narrative determinism…AKA “listen, I don’t make the rules – that’s just how it is, guv…nothing either one of us can do about, anyway”

…so…another one that’s been going around has it that kyiv deliberately employed a tactic that would be a spoiler for the rip & the upshot of that is that they (& I believe the french) will henceforth not be sharing intelligence with the US in any of its guises that they aren’t prepared to assume is henceforth available to russia verbatim

…these…may not be serious people despite all the serious offices they claim to fill…but…they do appear to be in earnest…so…anytime someone’s deity wants to claim the credit the GOP congress-critters are inexplicably frit of when it used to be the stuff of their actual fantasies…they can go on ahead & start smiting with the great vengeance & furious anger like quentin wrote the part for sam jackson…I am open to religious conversion through miraculous deliverance from apparent damnation to a room with a view set to “hellscape”?

      • Well, similar to here, we’ve seen it’s entirely one thing to talk about building glorious rich white person paradise and entirely another when the jack-booted thugs start shooting from the hip. Even here in the Gun Violence Zone (the very worst Sonic the Hedgehog stage, obviously) Americans are enormously pissed off about faux cops shooting a nice white lady in the street and then lying about it. And that’s a real backlash, not a “the Russian bots keep repeating the party line” astroturf affair.

And of course these power-hungry fools think they have 80% approval rating on every move so they do it, even though “acquire Greenland” polls only slightly better than “get terminal cancer.” (I always love polls like that because 3% of Democrats said they were in favor and I would just enjoy meeting those people to figure out exactly how that Frankenstein’s monster of politics happened outside a lab setting.) And if that’s enough to bury Reform or AfD or Wilders or Le Pen or Orban, then great, let Trump take down the entire operation, it’s exactly what they all deserve.

Also, to the “economics” thing, it’s why I’m annoyed at the Democrats trying to bring everything back to affordability. Yes, it’s important, yes, voters notice, yes, it can swing elections, but especially here, electeds have effectively ZERO control over that it! If you run on “prices will go down!” and they don’t, welp, we’ve already found that even Trumpers can see and remember that from their beloved! Chuck Schumer can’t lower the price of milk but he can say “We won’t fund ICE” and it’s like maybe try to do the things you can to work up to what isn’t necessarily feasible now. But instead it’s like “what about a child care credit” and it’s like fuck, man, they’re killing people in the streets, maybe do something about that?
