A lot of people like to blame the NIL rules now for “ruining” college football since OMG booster clubs and whatever else can buy the best players. As if that (1) hasn’t always been happening and (2) given the likelihood of a short pro career due to injuries, of course it’s logical for these players to try to get paid!!!
Anyways, I’d like to counter with how nobody talks about the problem of the fuckery with coach’s pay and how head coaches get fired and then they play pass the trash to other universities who spend waaaaay too much money for the same coach.
Case in point: Penn State fired head coach James Franklin.
They’re on the hook for $50mil. Per the terms of his contract, he’s getting $7mil a year until 2031. Plus they’re covering an insurance plan for $1mil.
This would be the second highest payout to fire a head coach. Texas A&M paid $76mil to fire Jimbo Fisher a few years ago.
I don’t get why a COLLEGE footbawl coach should get paid millions and his players get shit. Also shows how fucked up places are if they put emphasis on paying college coaches and not professors.
Also for public universities, often the football head coach is technically the highest paid state employee for the whole state.
The head football coach for Navy is the highest paid person by the Armed Forces. Not like an admiral or a four star general, a football coach.
It does seem fucked up but it does make some sense when you realize that they bring in more revenue than any other “state worker”. I’m all for athletes not being tied to schools or coaches though when they leave for more money & also athletes getting paid. It would be nice if schools had some kind of salary cap though as now you have teams like Alabama that every player is making over 1mil while smaller schools can’t offer much at all. Gonzaga is a private college but wouldn’t still exist if not for basketball revenue & new enrollment it brought back in the ’90’s.

When I was growing up I was subtly advised that someone like me (poor, aspirational, very bright) should stay away from universities famous for their sports programs. That was a red flag denoting a state school in the Midwest with 200,000 undergraduates. I took my teachers’ and guidance counselor’s advice.
A few friends of mine went to Columbia. They have a football team and they must play in the Ivy League league. No one takes this seriously and game day is like Mardi Gras. Costumes, day drinking, a good time all around.
One of my friends was in this impromptu “orchestra” and to open the game she would play the flute, very badly according to her, to “Nearer My God to Thee,” which is thought to be what the band on the Titanic was playing as the ship was going down. That’s college football done right!
I’ve said it for decades and there has been nothing compelling enough to change my mind: the athletes are already getting paid in the form of a free education, which most of the other students end up paying for over the course of their lives. If athletes want to get paid “more”, then fine–make them employees of the school. That means no free degree, but they get more money, plus benefits, etc. I went to a Div I school. They get zero sympathy from me.
