TGIF! [DOT 2/6/23]

Hi all! Hope you had a nice week so far. Let’s see how it’s going for others…

  1. Is it me or does something look off about the DeSantis pic? Other than the clothing. The proportions seem off, like Ron has been photoshopped in to appear larger than the rest of them. I can see that he’s standing out in front of them so some of it is perspective. But his head is twice the size of his wife’s.

    • Good eye. Both Ron and Casey DeSantis are 5’9″, so the picture is definitely shopped. Note that she’s wearing heels but he’s been blown up to “exceed” her height. It’s clearly some sort of bullshit to make him look like he’s a linebacker or something. Like Trump used to do with his heels and shoe lifts. The more things change …

DeSantis does have a doughy potato head, but it’s not as big as it looks here. And it’s not really due to perspective — look at how the feet are lined up. Nope, somebody altered the picture.

From my perspective (6 feet) DeSantis is short.

      • Nobody will tell him. I originally thought he was stupid, but I’ve realized he’s got a ton of mental issues. He did graduate from Ivy League schools.

He operates in two modes: anger and incandescent rage. He cannot stand to be thwarted in any way. The reason he’s always so incoherent is that he can’t comprehend having to explain himself to anyone — people should just DO WHAT HE SAYS NOW.

I’m not sure what the clinical definition is, but whatever it is, he’s seriously disturbed. Disney’s given him numerous off-ramps to quietly end the feud and look victorious to ignorant MAGAs, but he won’t stop. He apparently can’t once he’s enraged. He’s a vicious bully (there’s footage of him berating teenagers, and they weren’t even trans or LBGTQ+). He shuts off when he’s around anyone that’s “beneath” him — he won’t acknowledge their existence. He’ll just stare into space. He actually has trouble relating to anyone he does acknowledge. I don’t think he sees other people as human beings at all. There’s also footage of him cackling weirdly because he’s trying to act human. Mostly they’ve tried to trot out his wife to handle the basic PR, but people have seen through that.

Republican donors, once they ‘meet’ him, stop donating to him. So if he scares those lunatics, you can imagine how bad he actually is.

This is not someone who should be around nuclear weapons. Trump is a buffoon, but had some slight cognizance of repercussions, at least in the sense that he’s an unmitigated coward. DeSantis would launch nukes if another country made fun of him.

        • I dunno, is that a mental illness or just the last resort of every bully?

It is pretty hilarious to watch Mango Unchained be like “Woke? Whatever, don’t care.” and rise in the polls while DeSantis gets angrier and angrier about the existence of, like, actual rainbows. (“WHAT IS MOTHER NATURE TRYING TO DO TO OUR CHILDREN?!?!?!?!?!?”) I think DeSantis and his team are just way too online, where the woke thing plays great, but out in the real world, most people don’t care nearly as much.

          • Right — RDS bought into the same myth that the pundits did — that Trump was popular because of specific positions he took.

Trump wasn’t popular with the kooks because he was “antiwoke.” “Antiwoke” was popular with the kooks because that’s what Trump was.

Trump’s ability to pick up and shed positions and be completely haphazard and hypocritical is a selling point to his fans. RDS being so subservient is what marks him as a loser.

          • Bullies definitely have anger issues, but it’s the weird behavior that puts DeSantis over the line. He’s completely unable to interact with human beings. His handlers are getting more and more desperate about it as he gets out in public more. Say what you will about Mango, but he can talk to people and he doesn’t go offline and into some odd trance when nobody of significance is around. DeSantis’ reactions are frequently at odds with the situation or completely over the top (he just started screaming at a reporter in New Hampshire a day or two ago). I think we get much more detailed reports here because he’s the governor. People in Idaho don’t care if DeSantis makes a strange, slack-jawed expression and flaps his jaw oddly when handling a press question in Japan, but our tax money paid for the trip, so we pay more attention. There’s more going on there than a kid who picks on another kid at the school bus stop.

    • There’s a “Because Miami” side blog off of Dan Lebetards show that talks about carolla all the time. Super shady, along with, well, it seems everyone in Mihami.

      • It’s an eerily precise summation of the entire article. The parallels are all there:

        1. In over his head in an area where he has no experience or training.

        2. Stuck in a business that’s trending down.

        3. No coherent plan for reversing the trend.

        4. Layoffs and firings, total destruction of morale.

        5. Bizarre rightward lurch in an attempt to tap the MAGA “market.”

        6. Encouraging bad actors and propagandists to fill the void, somehow thinking that would appeal to advertisers.

        7. Complete inability to recognize, or maybe admit, massive fuckups.

They’re working off the exact same “playbook,” except it’s not a playbook at all, it’s some ad-hoc shoot-from-the-hip Hail Mary mentality.

I mean, if you get offered a job where you’ve got to turn something around, you come up with a plan before you say yes.

    • My take is that Zaslav genuinely believes this idiocy too.

I think the heart of it is nobody in charge — and this includes Zucker when he was in charge too — understands what good journalism as far as Trump would actually mean.

It’s not about judging in some kind of moralistic sense, it’s about analyzing what Trump’s attacks on the rule of law meant to the country. It’s not about random fact dumps, it’s about putting together accurate narratives.

The way they did it was “Trump says he wants to build a wall but here’s a fact check on the cost” or else have pundits saying “Trump breaks norms, good or bad?” But they lacked a foundation of who he was and what he wanted, which meant we kept getting “this may have been the day Trump finally became president” all the way up to January 2021.

  2. 44k plus land and utility connections? Yikes that’s gonna get very expensive very fast for that small of a house. Maybe better if you live somewhere where you can do solar and be off municipal water supplies?
