The main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, one of the nation’s best, is currently highlighting its collection of vinyl records. You can browse them and then use listening stations. My happiness upon learning about this was tempered by the two very prominent FAQ sections on the web page: How to Handle a Record and How to Use a Record Player.
https://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations/central/vinyl-collection
Also, here’s another freeloading seal loafing around, but I don’t think this is the same seal that broke into the marine biologist’s house and scared the cat:
If there was an umbrella drink on the table that seal video would have been perfect.
When I was a kid, the record section of the Chicago Public Library was my second home. Since we lived in Little Italy, I could ride my bike there. They had listening booths with record players and headphones and I would just grab anything from old jazz and blues to obscure British bands and had a special fondness for that beautiful boxed set of von Karajan conducting all 9 Beethoven symphonies. Also, there was a guy behind the desk with a beard who put me on to the van Gelder Blue Note recordings and the Folkways stuff and even some spoken word.
I owe a lot to libraries. Someday I’ll tell the story of the librarian lady who was mean to me and then taught me how to use the microfilm viewer and then became my friend.
I liked the Big Bang Theory till Sheldon began reminding me of my former housemate… wait… not that Big Bang?
Who knew that putting a fraudster Bat Boy in charge of the money would lead to suspicions that he’s being a fraudster?
Cutting off funds to four critical races (Ohio, Penn, Georgia and Arizona) that you needed to win doesn’t sound smart at all… from a non partisan purely technical view especially as you’re defending two of those seats and the other two the oppo are defending are in states that you GOPer clowns control.
However, since I don’t like right wingnuts and Trump Nazis, I say Go Rick Scott Go! Soak them GOPers for all they’re worth!
It’s truly amazing that Scott has been able to completely whitewash ONE OF THE BIGGEST MEDICARE FRAUDS EVER PERPETRATED. The dude is a straight-up crook, and nobody seems to remember that fact.
The other interesting thing is what the money got spent on:
“As of that month, the committee disclosed spending just $23 million on ads, with more than $21 million going into text messages and more than $12 million to American Express credit card payments, whose ultimate purpose isn’t clear from the filings,” the report explained. “The committee also spent at least $13 million on consultants, $9 million on debt payments and more than $7.9 million renting mailing lists, campaign finance data show.”
A ton of that stuff looks like Rick spending money on himself, which should be no shock to anyone. I can’t find the link at the moment, but one article I read said there were a lot of private jet charters and so forth on there, probably under the American Express charges.
The cretin is so greedy he can’t resist stealing from his own party. Yep, Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility. Why spend my money when I can steal it from you?
I will say I’ve always had trouble with the Big Bang theory. That’s a shitload of matter to have compressed into a small space at the beginning of time. Plus it doesn’t explain what came before the Big Bang. The matter had to start somewhere. Unless we’re in an eternal loop where the universe expands and contracts then blows up again.
I’d be slow to think there’s any debunking, though.
I followed the sources of that msn.com article, and they end up at a website called The Trumpet which says about itself:
“We use a single overarching criterion that sets us apart from other news sources and keeps us focused on what truly is important. That criterion is Bible prophecy.”
Having lived in the South for as long as I did, I didn’t need to backtrack the source of the article to know it had a Biblical bent. The language is just coded enough to stand out. My only point is that I’ve never been convinced by the Big Bang theory. It’s just a little too neat and tidy, kind of like God snapping his fingers to create the universe.
Sure, I just think that’s more to do with the popular description of it — scientists spend a huge amount of time trying to think through the implications of a starting point like that and ask all kinds of cosmological questions that the creationists pretend they ignore.
The theory itself wad based on using mathematical models to fit the observable universe’s movements, then the conditions of the “big bang” is one of the logical conclusions thereof. Imagine a fraction where the denominator (time) approaches zero making the resulting value (density) goes towards infinity – or singularity. This math breaks down on the edges because the theories were derived from observations in a limited range of phenomena. As observations and measurement techniques improve, theories get improved upon.
That said, theorists already have an awareness that their theories do not account for the full range of possible physical observations. Unlike Bible fuckers (not you, the linked article), decent scientists have self-awareness of their knowledge gaps.
I get that. I’ve worked with medical scientists for years so I understand how research and theories work, I’ve just never been sold on this one. I think it’s more complex than that. But I don’t have a doctorate in astrophysics so I get to just spout off about it here.
Great job @Lymond perfect DOT. Point Break is a great movie & Busey was great in it. I went to high school with the actor that played “Warchild” in that movie, he was not a nice person. Busey was also in another great movie about surfers, Big Wednesday. My favorite thing with him though was the short lived show “I’m with Busey”. The man has been crazy for a long time!

The CNN thing is weird because that would be ratings poison — there is no way they can compete with Fox and tainting what’s left of their tattered brand as a straight news source only loses them viewers. They need to completely rebuild how they report on the news, and all they’re doing is trying to change the thermostat.
There seems to be a similar level of disconnect from the siblings on the HBO/Warner side where the CEO David Zaslav seems to operating from a pure cost cutting perspective and thinks quality is a pure commodity like gravel or corn. That’s not how it works in the entertainment business.
We had two interesting little discoveries this morning while out in the canoe. The first is that at some point a bird must have “deposited” a grape seed on the island because there is a huge Concord grape vine on the edge of it. We harvested a few and they’re pretty good but not particularly sweet yet.
The other thing was seeing an interesting water bird that we’d never seen before. Uncle Google tells me that it’s a green heron, which is never heard of before. Very pretty bird.
