Motown started from doo-wop. Even if these labels say otherwise, these were actually early pre-1963 Tamla and Motown releases, and they were pure doo-wop.
Also, Harvey Fuqua (founder of the seminal doo-wop group The Moonglows) was a key figure in the development of Motown. He was also Berry Gordy’s brother-in-law. He sang backup and was vocal coach on nearly all the greatest Motown records. Oh, and Marvin Gaye was originally a member of The Moonglows.
Gladys Knight had a… complicated time at Motown. Gladys Knight and the Pips were successful before signing with Berry Gordy, and after as well.
This is If I Were Your Woman, which was a hit during the Motown years —
But Gladys Knight had been wary of signing with Motown because she’d heard stories about the snakepit that Gordy grew. The rest of the group wanted to move labels though, so she went along.
That was on Hi Records, not Motown. Al Green is associated with Memphis, although he grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His devoutly religious father threw him out of the house for listening to Jackie Wilson records, so Al went to live with a prostitute and hustled for a while himself before his high school singing group, Al Green & the Soul Mates recorded a record that ended up charting on Billboard’s Cash Box. Thus began his storied musical career.
Raphael Saadiq is on Columbia, but totally sounds like old school Motown.

My favorite uncle loved Motown and I really enjoy it and know a lot of popular hits from that era of music.
