  1. …not to be a massive downer…yet again…but…the replies to this were interesting?

I genuinely think some people do not want to look this in the eye/think about it because it is so awful. We wrote what I thought was a pretty eye-opening story about all this and I was surprised by the lack of engagement tbh

…there’s a good few that rattle off staggeringly awful points of comparison

more dead than the indonesian genocide; than cambodian genocide, than gaza genocide, than hiroshima and nasgasaki. just difficult to contemplate.

…or feature projections from a million dead that wouldn’t have been so far up to 14million as soon as 2030…but the atlantic tech guy also said this part

that's not a criticism of audience, tbh! there is a huge surplus of difficult news to contend with these days. a lot of feedback i've gotten on work in this administration boils down to: 'thank you for writing about this but i dunno if i can stare down yet another awful thing'

…& the chorus that followed demonstrated a few things, maybe?

this is broadly what im gettin at. and it makes a lot of sense. (it's also, for the press, a strange dynamic bc when people don't engage it sends a certain signal)

…anyway…as luck would have it I can’t sit here & blather about it all day…but…I…might think that’s a mechanism that is buttressing a lot of stuff that ought not to be able to support its own weight according to physics…so to speak?
